Garden City Community College Launches New Electrical Technology Program
[Garden City, KS] July 6, 2026 -- Garden City Community College is expanding its technical education offerings with the launch of its new Electrical Technology program beginning in Fall 2026. The program was developed to help meet growing workforce needs by preparing students for careers in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems.
Designed in collaboration with industry partners and aligned with regional workforce demands, the Electrical Technology program provides students with hands-on training and practical experience that can lead directly to employment in the skilled trades.
"The demand for qualified electricians and electrical technicians continues to grow across our region," said Dr. Ryan Ruda, President of Garden City Community College. "This new program reflects our commitment to providing students with career-focused education while supporting local employers with a highly skilled workforce."
Students in the program will gain experience installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical apparatus and systems through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on lab training. Coursework includes instruction in the principles of electronics and electrical systems, residential, commercial, and industrial wiring, power transmission, DC and AC motors, controls, electrical distribution panels, safety, industrial and household appliances, job estimation, electrical testing and inspection, and applicable electrical codes and standards.
The program also emphasizes communication, problem-solving, and a strong work ethic to prepare graduates for success in today's workforce.
To provide flexible pathways for students, the program offers multiple stackable credentials, including a 31-credit-hour Certificate B, a 46-credit-hour Certificate C, and a 64-credit-hour Associate in Applied Science (AAS) that combines technical coursework with general education classes.
Graduates will be prepared for entry-level careers installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems, with the technical knowledge and skills to work with electric-power wiring, DC and AC motors, controls, and electrical distribution panels.
The curriculum aligns with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) CIP Code 46.0302: Electrician, ensuring students receive instruction consistent with national educational standards for the electrical trade.
The Electrical Technology program complements GCCC's existing Construction Technology program while expanding opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in one of the nation's most in-demand skilled trades.
Enrollment for the Fall 2026 semester is now open. Students interested in learning more about the Electrical Technology program or applying for admission can visit GCCC's website or contact the GCCC Admissions Office at 620-276-9608.
