RENOVATIONS OF STATE-OF-THE-ART ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOMS ARE COMPLETE
[Garden City, KS] - Aug. 26, 2020 -- For months, the sounds of drills, backhoe loaders and hammers, infiltrated the Perryman Athletic Complex and Broncbuster Stadium. And after nearly a half year's work, the full remodel on the brand-new, state-of-the-art sports medicine department at Garden City Community College is finally complete.
"I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome of the renovations," Head Athletic Trainer, Allison Griffin said. "Those facilities are truly something out of my dreams. Our contractors, construction, facilities and maintenance staff have done incredible work putting all of this together."
The $491,000 project was offset by a $300,000 grant from the Sunderland Foundation, a company based in Overland Park, KS that annually makes grants to charitable and non-profit organizations for construction and special-interest projects. The gift was directed through the GCCC Endowment Association, a private fundraising arm of the community college and a 501 (c) (3) organization, which also served as the grant applicant for this project.
"While the Endowment Association has for the last several decades focused on local foundations and charitable trusts, this is the first time we've gone outside of southwest Kansas to acquire private grant funding," Endowment Director Jeremy Gigot said back in February. "We are so excited with the success of this endeavor."
The project involved renovating both the athletic training room inside the Perryman Athletic Complex and the one located out at Broncbuster Stadium. The facilities are now equipped with new treatment tables with leg and back rests on gaskets to allow for specified treatments, treatment carts and stools, therapeutic modalities with electrical stimulation, whirlpools, ice machines and iPads with docking stations for daily sign ins. The room at the football stadium, which doubles as a visitor's locker room, has been totally redesigned with fully operational showers.
"Our main priority is the safety of our student athletes," Director of Athletics Greg McVey explained. "These new facilities provide that and so much more. When the college put this idea in motion, we had a specific plan. And to see it come to life; to see the student athletes getting the care that they need with modern amenities, is truly unbelievable."
This is the first major renovation for the athletic training facility since it opened in 1985.
"This project allows us to tremendously increase the academic experience for both our athletic training and exercise-science students," College President Dr. Ryan Ruda said.
The project was completed by Dick Construction, Inc., of Garden City, which submitted the lowest-cost bid. The remaining cost of $191,000 was covered by capital outlay funds. The facilities were designed by GMCN Architects in Garden City.
"Having two facilities is affording the sports medicine department the opportunity to provide better care across all teams by giving us the space to do so," Griffin added. "I truly could not have asked for better."
Garden City Community College exists to produce positive contributors to the economic and social well-being of society.
