[GCCC and Colby CC Sign MOU for Fire Science Certifications in Colby Service Area]

[Garden City, KS, August 27, 2019--] Garden City Community College Administrators visited Colby Community College on August 26 to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the institution. The MOU provides for a partnership between GCCC and Colby CC for Fire Science training in the Colby Community College service area, allowing GCCC to provide instruction and certifications for Fire Science within the Colby area and to local fire departments as well as to develop a Fire Science pathway.

The new agreement will enable students who are living and working in the Colby CC service area to remain in their geographic location in order to take general education credits through Colby CC and Fire Science credits through GCCC.  Participants will also have the opportunity to complete a Fire Science certificate through GCCC as part of the agreement.

"As a college, we must seek opportunities to expand programs and offerings throughout Western Kansas," said GCCC President, Dr. Ryan Ruda.  "We appreciate the opportunity to work collaboratively with Colby Community College as well as the leadership from Dr. Seth Carter, President, and Brad Bennett, Vice President for Instruction and Student Services at Colby.  Going forward, we must continue to work collaboratively and provide pathways for training and higher learning, specifically with programs that are unique to our community colleges. GCCC offers the only Fire Science program in Western Kansas, and we have identified the need to develop highly qualified and trained individuals in Western Kansas.  I appreciate the leadership of Larry Pander, Fire Science Instructor at GCCC, Chuck Pfeifer, Dean of Technical Education and Workforce Development, and Marc Malone, Vice President for Instruction, for their commitment to developing this partnership and to expanding the fire science program for Western Kansas communities."
