MERCER ART GALLERY HOSTING SOLO EXHIBITIONIST, BRIAN HUTCHINSON

September 23, 2020

[Garden City, KS]-Sept. 23, 2020 -- A new exhibition opened this week at the Garden City Community College Mercer Gallery entitled "Transmogrification: A solo exhibition by Brian Hutchinson" and will run through Oct. 16.

Hutchinson, who has taught Art Education and Studio Foundations at Fort Hays State University, is also an accomplished printmaker and mixed media artist, who has an extensive exhibition record.

"Brian is a veteran teacher in the region," said Michael Knutson, an art instructor at Garden City Community College. "A lot of students who attend Garden City right now, are planning on studying under him at Fort Hays State."

Hutchinson's art can best be described as rare and abstract. The longtime teacher is a cancer survivor, and a bulk of his work has been inspired by his illness.

"What's unique about Brian is that his printmaking techniques have to deal with the inter psyche and the human brain," Knutson added. "His art is very nontraditional."

Hutchinson has spent a large portion of his career producing highly refined prints and drawings with an emphasis on the creation process. But what separated him from traditional artists was his inner impulse to break free of the mainstream ideology. That included his new cycle of monotypes, and the recombination of torn and appropriated portions of his previous work into larger expressions of ideas.

"The new cycle of concept for me now deals with invigorating Greek sculpture and Roman copies of those as they relate to the ideals of human beauty throughout time," Hutchinson said. "These references strike me as parallel to the contemporary sense of beauty ideals as we beg women to conform to an impossible body type so they can be described as beautiful. This contrasts with the idea that the male ideal was similarly prescribed as youthful yet, muscular, and quite feminine."

The art gallery is open Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the regular academic year. It's currently limited to 12 people at a time. The exhibition is located in the west wing of the Joyce Fine Arts building at 801 Campus Drive in Garden City. Exhibits are always free and open to the public. For more information, contact Knutson at 620-276-9644 or michael.knutson@gcccks.edu
