BOT Approves Updates for Athletic Training
[Garden City, KS] Feb. 11, 2020 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to approve updates and renovations to athletic training facilities in two areas on campus during a regularly scheduled meeting.
The board, which met Feb. 11, 2020, voted unanimously on the $491,000 project that is planned for completion by the start of the upcoming fall semester.
The project includes renovation and remodel of the athletic training room inside the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex. It also includes renovation and remodel of a maintenance and restroom facility at Broncbuster Stadium, which will serve as a secondary training area for practices and game days. The stadium is primarily used by GCCC's football, soccer, and track and field programs.
The renovations overall will greatly improve GCCC's athletic training facilities while also enhancing education and training practicum opportunities, President Dr. Ryan Ruda said during Tuesday evening's public meeting.
"This project allows us to tremendously increase the academic experience for both our athletic training and exercise science students," Ruda told the board.
Ruda added that the projects will provide more space while improving prevention and care for student-athletes, as well.
GCCC is receiving $300,000 in private grant funding to help finance the nearly half-a-million-dollar project. The remaining $191,000 of the project cost will be covered by capital outlay funds.
2020-2021 Tuition & Fees
The GCCC Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to keep tuition rates for all GCCC students flat through the 2020-2021 academic year but increase fees by $4 per credit hour.
Tuition rates for the next academic year will remain at $61 per credit hour for Kansas residents, $75 per credit hour for border-state students, $80 per credit hour for out-state students, and $98 for international students. Online tuition rates will remain $150 per credit hour for all students, which includes tuition and fees.
Per the board's action, student fees will increase from $47 per credit hour to $51 per credit hour starting in the fall. According to Dr. Ruda, the increase will be used to offset student scholarships as well as general student activities and resources.
GCCC's tuition and fees remain one of the lowest in the state among Kansas' 19 community colleges.
Housing options will also increase from a range of $50 to $150 annually starting next fall, and the cost of an annual meal plan will go up $80. The increases in room and board are due to additional debt service on student housing, expected increases in utilities and insurance, and necessary maintenance needs, according to Dr. Ruda.
