GCCC to Offer New Associate in Science Degree in Early Childhood Education

[Garden City, KS] April 20, 2026 -- Garden City Community College (GCCC) is proud to announce the addition of a new Associate in Science degree in Early Childhood Education set to launch in Fall 2026.

The 60-credit hour degree is designed to provide students with a strong academic foundation as they begin their journey in Early Childhood Education, particularly for those interested in becoming Pre-K teachers. Through a combination of coursework and hands-on learning, students will develop essential skills in written and oral communication, critical thinking, and instructional practices.

This new associate degree expands on GCCC’s existing Early Childhood Education Certificate A by offering a comprehensive, transfer-focused pathway for students who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree and teach young children.

“This degree creates a clear and accessible pathway for students who are passionate about early childhood education,” said Layla Martinez, GCCC Associate Professor of Education. “It not only provides a transferable associate degree, but also ensures students are well-prepared to continue their education at the university level.”

Students enrolled in the program will be encouraged to work closely with their academic advisor to ensure their coursework aligns with transfer requirements, as specific course expectations and elective options may vary by institution.

GCCC’s Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education is designed to seamlessly transfer to partnering universities, including Fort Hays State University and Newman University, both of which offer bachelor’s degree programs in Early Childhood Unified (Birth–3rd Grade). This alignment helps streamline the transition from GCCC to a four-year institution, supporting students in achieving their long-term career goals in education.

Additionally, this degree qualifies for the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program through the Kansas State Department of Education. This program allows students to earn an education degree while working in paid classroom positions. Apprentices complete their degree at GCCC while gaining hands-on experience alongside a mentor teacher in a school district. After completing the program, students continue at a four-year institution to finish their bachelor’s degree and teacher preparation.

With this new degree, GCCC continues its commitment to expanding academic opportunities that meet workforce needs and support student success at every stage of their educational journey.

Enrollment for Fall 2026 courses is now open. For more information about the Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education, visit the GCCC website or contact earlychildhood@gcccks.edu or 620-275-3235.
