GCCC Phi Rho Pi Earns Two National Titles at 2026 Nationals Tournament

[Garden City, KS] March 30, 2026 -- Garden City Community College’s Phi Rho Pi Speech & Debate Team achieved remarkable success at the 2026 National Online Speech & Debate Tournament, held March 27–28, earning national recognition in the program’s inaugural year.

Competing against more than 14 colleges and universities from across the country, the Broncbusters demonstrated exceptional skill and determination on the national stage.

Freshman Jordan Humphreys led the team with an outstanding performance, earning two National Silver Titles in both Dramatic Interpretation and Program Oral Interpretation. The dual honors mark an impressive accomplishment, particularly at the national level, where competition is both deep and rigorous.

Additional students representing GCCC included Allison-Jayne Hintz, Katelynn Horne, and Keely Petrus. Each competitor contributed to a strong team presence throughout the tournament, showcasing talent, preparation, and competitive excellence.

“This is an incredible milestone for our program,” said Savannah Sanburg, Team Coach and Assistant Professor of Communication at GCCC. “To see our students perform at such a high level in our first year speaks volumes about their dedication, resilience, and commitment to excellence in forensics.”

The success at nationals highlights a promising future for GCCC’s Phi Rho Pi program and reflects the college’s continued commitment to student achievement both inside and outside the classroom.

The GCCC Speech & Debate Team, Phi Rho Pi, empowers students by enhancing their public speaking, critical thinking, and argumentation skills through various competitive and collaborative events. This inclusive and dynamic student organization is open to all GCCC students, regardless of major or prior experience.
