GCCC Comprehensive Learning Center Receives CRLA Recertification for Tutor Training Program
[Garden City, KS] November 4, 2025 -- The Garden City Community College (GCCC) Mary Jo Williams Comprehensive Learning Center (CLC) has been approved for Levels 1 and 2 recertification through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC).
This recertification recognizes the CLC’s continued excellence in tutor training and its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of academic support. For more than thirty years, CRLA has been a global leader in learning assistance, reading, and academic support programs, with nearly 1,300 members and over 2,000 certified training programs worldwide.
The GCCC CLC’s tutor training program successfully completed CRLA’s rigorous peer review process, meeting standards for tutor selection, training, direct service, and evaluation. This recertification signifies that GCCC’s program continues to demonstrate outstanding effectiveness, thoughtful curriculum design, and innovative assessment methods.
According to the CRLA review team, the CLC’s program stands out for its “very detailed lesson plans, which ensure thorough and standardized instruction,” and for its “creative and engaging assessments.” Advanced Tutor certification even requires the creation of a video demonstrating the practical application of trained skills, such as incorporating memorization techniques into tutoring sessions.
Through this program, new tutors complete Level 1 training to become Certified Tutors, while returning tutors advance to Level 2 to earn Advanced Tutor status. Every tutor working in the CLC is either progressing toward one of these certifications or has completed both, ensuring that all student support is grounded in professional, research-based tutoring practices.
Additionally, the CLC’s curriculum is continuously refined to align with the specific needs of the campus and student body, ensuring ongoing relevance and impact.
“We’re extremely proud of this recognition,” said Sara McClure, Coordinator of Tutoring at GCCC. “Our tutors play a vital role in supporting student success, and this recertification affirms the quality and dedication that define our program.”
The Mary Jo Williams Comprehensive Learning Center provides free tutoring and academic support to all GCCC students, helping them develop effective study skills and achieve academic success.
