GCCC Board of Trustees Meeting Recap December 10, 2024
[Garden City, KS] December 11, 2024 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees met during a regularly scheduled meeting on December 10, 2024, in the Omar D. Angeles Endowment Room at GCCC.
The Board approved a bid to remodel the Spruce Street Tech Center, consolidating Adult Education programs into a single, comprehensive community resource and training center. Currently spread across multiple locations, this move will free up space at the Garden City Career Connections Academy (GCCCA) Campus Drive building for construction trades and proposed electrical training programs. The remodel will support enrollment growth, as GCCCA serves over 700 students annually through GED, English Language Acquisition (ELA), and Citizenship classes. It will also offer mental and personal health services through a partnership with Livewell, benefiting both students and the community. The $950,000 project, awarded to Wiens & Company Construction of Hutchinson, Kansas, will be funded by private foundation grant, and state allocated funds.
The Board approved Garden City Community College's participation in the Kansas Insurance Cooperative for Schools (KICS). This decision follows the college's June 2024 approval of a property and casualty insurance proposal from IMA, which included six months of property coverage and 12 months of casualty coverage. After Philadelphia, the current property insurer, discontinued coverage for the education market, the college sought alternatives, contacted KICS, and was accepted into the Cooperative. The Board approved the KICS proposal, which includes a pro-rated Total Program Contribution of $346,584.58, with coverage effective from January 1, 2025, to June 30, 2025.
Additionally, GCCC President Dr. Ryan Ruda presented an Interlocal Agreement between GCCC and the City of Garden City, allowing the City to clean and use property north of the softball fields for a new disc golf course. The land is currently unused by GCCC, and the agreement includes a termination clause for future needs. A local group has funded and worked on the cleanup and maintenance of the area. The agreement presents a community benefit with no financial cost to GCCC, which retains ownership of the property while the City and local group manage it. The disc golf course on campus will remain. No action was required from the Board.
The Board also heard five-year program reviews from the Nursing and John Deere programs. Each review included an overview of the program, key statistics, achievements from the past five years, and potential opportunities for future growth and improvement.
One executive session was held and no action was taken.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Omar D. Angeles Endowment Room in the Beth Tedrow Student Center, Garden City Community College Campus.
