GCCC Opens Enrollment for New Community Health Worker Program

[Garden City, KS] February 11, 2025 – Garden City Community College (GCCC) is now enrolling students in its newly approved Community Health Worker (CHW) program, designed to prepare individuals for rewarding careers in healthcare and social advocacy. This program addresses the increasing demand for professionals who serve as trusted liaisons between healthcare providers, social service agencies, and the communities they support.

Community Health Workers play a vital role in improving healthcare access, promoting wellness, and advocating for underserved populations. GCCC’s CHW program equips students with the skills needed to support public health initiatives, provide informal counseling, and connect individuals with essential resources such as food assistance, housing, and health related services.

“This program bridges a critical gap in our healthcare system by empowering individuals to connect communities with the resources they need to thrive,” said Dr. Ryan Ruda, President of GCCC. “As the first community college in Kansas to offer this program, we are proud to lead the way in enhancing workforce development and community well-being.

The 10-credit-hour curriculum is aligned with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Community Health Worker Coalition. Students will develop expertise in community outreach, education, social support, and advocacy. Upon completing the program, students will qualify to register as Certified Kansas Community Health Workers and can work in various settings such as healthcare clinics, public health departments, community-based organizations, nonprofit organizations, schools and outreach programs, health insurance agencies, and more.
