GCCC Graduates First Students from Medical Assistant Program
[Garden City, KS] May 10, 2024 -- Garden City Community College is excited to announce the inaugural graduation of its Medical Assistant program, marking a significant milestone in the educational journey of three exceptional students. Christine Strout, Leslie Barrios, and Anahi Franco have successfully completed the curriculum and earned their Medical Assistant Certificate C.
LaLani Kasselman, Director of Allied Health at GCCC, expressed her pride in these students' accomplishments and promising futures. "We're thrilled by this group's achievements. Even before graduation, they've secured positions as Medical Assistants in local healthcare facilities," she remarked.
Recognizing the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals, particularly in rural Southwest Kansas, area healthcare providers approached GCCC to develop a Medical Assistant program. In response, GCCC launched the comprehensive three-semester, 48-credit sequence in Fall 2022.
The Medical Assistant program equips individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in medical office administration and clinical duties. Students learn a range of competencies, including patient intake and care, laboratory procedures, assisting with examinations, medication administration, and first aid. The curriculum covers foundational subjects such as anatomy, medical terminology, ethics, patient communication, office procedures, and clinical practices. Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared to take the national exam to become Registered Medical Assistants (RMAs), opening doors to diverse career opportunities in healthcare.
