GCCC BOT Elects 2023 Board Officers

[Garden City, KS] January 18, 2023 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees elected a new Chairman and Vice-Chairman during the annual officer elections at the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.

Following his previous term as Vice-Chairman, Leonard Hitz was elected Chairman for 2023. Dr. Merilyn Douglass previously held the position. Shanda Smith was elected to serve as Vice-Chairman for 2023. Retaining their previously held positions were Beth Tedrow as KACCT Representative, Shanda Smith as Designated Endowment Representative, and David Rupp as Economic Development Corporation Representative and Broncbuster Athletic Association Representative.

The Board heard a report from President Ruda regarding a new scholarship initiative at GCCC. The President's Scholarship Initiative aims to add 50 new endowed scholarships at a minimum of $10,000 each in 2023. GCCC saw 250 students that were qualified and showed financial need go without scholarships last year. This lack of scholarship dollars triggered GCCC Administration to create the initiative in partnership with the GCCC Endowment Association. Individuals or businesses can start an endowed scholarship through the GCCC Endowment Association, and additional information is available on the GCCC website.

President Ruda also shared that the ongoing construction of the STEM Success Center, an addition to the Warren Fouse Science & Math Building, is progressing well and is on schedule. Additionally, he stated that GCCC has $150,000 of Community Service Tax Credits (CSP) available for purchase. The 50% tax credits will be used towards renovations to the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts building. The CSP tax credits can be used in 2023 and are available to purchase through Scott Kedrowski at scott.kedrowski@gcccks.edu or 620-276-9572.

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 6 p.m. in the Logan Aviation Endowment Room inside the Beth Tedrow Student Center at GCCC.
