GCCC BOT Approve Greenhouse and STEM Success Center Furniture
[Garden City, KS] May 17, 2023 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees approved the project completion of a greenhouse and furniture for the STEM Success Center during the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
As part of the Title III STEM grant and the Crop Production program (which GCCC will take forward for approval next year through the Kansas Board of Regents), a greenhouse will be constructed for learning laboratory and practical application of skills. The greenhouse kit has arrived on-site and will be located north of the Katharine Jones Tennis Courts at GCCC. Dick Construction was the sole bid, and the Board approved $411,816.00 for project completion (site work, erection, and management fees), to be paid from capital outlay.
Construction of the new STEM Success Center, a 10,000 square feet addition to the Warren Fouse Science and Math building featuring classroom, lab, office, and collaboration space dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), is on track to open for the Fall 2023 semester. GCCC Administration and the Title III team requested bids for furniture for the new center, and two bids were received. The Title III team held listening groups with math and science faculty as well as student leadership groups to obtain feedback on the furniture. The consensus was to recommend the bid from Scott Rice Office Interiors. The Board approved the furniture bid of $195,056.57 using approximately $7,000 from the Title III funds, and the remainder to be paid from collected 2022 tax credit funds.
The Board also heard a presentation and update from Scott Kedrowski, Dean of Advancement and Alumni Relations, regarding the newly launched GCCC Alumni Association. He demonstrated the new alumni website (www.gcccks.edu/alumni) and discussed the membership levels and benefits.
Two executive sessions were held, followed by board action on the President’s contract.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 6 p.m. in the Logan Aviation Endowment Room inside the Beth Tedrow Student Center at GCCC.
