First GCCC Registered Phlebotomy Technician Class Celebrates Exam Success
[Garden City, KS] November 9, 2023 -- Garden City Community College proudly announces the successful completion of the first class of students in the Registered Phlebotomy Technician pathway. Notably, all three students achieved a 100% pass rate on their first attempt of the national exam, a testament to their hard work and the quality of the pathway.
This year, the first-ever Laboratory Diagnostic & Phlebotomy course was developed and taught by Jami Major, GCCC Allied Health Department instructor, for the Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) pathway. The three passing students, Kristina Gilcrease, Kristina Hernandez, and Christine Strout, are now qualified to work anywhere in a U.S. CLIA-approved lab or testing center as Registered Phlebotomy Technicians.
"The addition of this pathway to the GCCC Allied Health Department is a significant milestone, and we are grateful to Jami Major for her dedication and hard work in developing and teaching the course," shared Glenda Owens, GCCC Director of Allied Health. "We believe the RPT pathway will provide essential skills and knowledge to our students, and we look forward to seeing their continued success."
The Registered Phlebotomy Technician pathway provides students with knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) government regulations, training for specimen and blood collection methods using proper techniques, and universal precautions for adults, children, and infants. The 16-week course includes 40 hours of onsite clinical training with local industry partners, after which the students are qualified to sit for a national exam to become an RPT.
