First-Gen Celebration 11:30-12:30
Garden City Community College (GCCC) TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) invites students, employees, and community members to celebrate the achievements and experiences of first-generation college students and professionals on Friday, November 6, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Thomas Saffell Library Lobby.
First-generation college students are generally defined as students whose parents did not complete a four-year college degree. For many, attending community college represents an important first step toward earning a degree, transferring to a university, or pursuing a rewarding career.
“Being first-generation isn't defined by the degree you're pursuing, but by the journey of navigating higher education without the benefit of a parent who has completed a four-year degree,” said Dana Nanninga, GCCC Director of TRIO Student Support Services. “We want to recognize the determination and accomplishments of our first-generation students while celebrating the faculty, staff, and community professionals who have traveled that same path. Their stories remind students of what's possible and that they don't have to navigate the journey alone.”
The celebration will feature guest speakers sharing their personal educational and professional journeys, along with interactive activities, opportunities to connect, and cupcakes. The event is designed to celebrate first-generation accomplishments, foster a sense of belonging, and inspire students to continue pursuing their educational and career goals.
Featured guest speakers include:
- Crystal Martinez, School Counselor
- Ana Carillo, School Librarian
- Viky Veyza, Instructional Coach
- Lorena Mendoza, Broadcaster & Reporter
- Yeimi Lopez-Darville, Chief Information Officer
The celebration is free and open to all GCCC students, employees, and community members, whether they are first-generation themselves or simply wish to support and celebrate those who are.
