GCCC Receives President’s Citation Award for Outstanding Contribution to Health and Wellness Initiatives

[Garden City, KS] November 12, 2024 -- Garden City Community College (GCCC) was honored with the President’s Citation Award at the annual Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (KAHPERD) Conference, held in Emporia, Kansas, on November 8th. Presented by the state organization, this award recognizes GCCC’s substantial contributions to improving the quality of life for Kansans, particularly through its impactful health and wellness initiatives that benefit students, employees, and the broader community.

The award underscores GCCC’s dedication to fostering a culture of wellness both on campus and in the community. Key efforts include a range of health and wellness programs, employee-led initiatives through a benefits committee, and valuable resources for personal and mental health support.

Dr. Ryan Ruda, President of GCCC, accepted the award at the KAHPERD conference. “We are honored to be recognized for our commitment to health and wellness,” said Dr. Ruda. “This award reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff and faculty, particularly Jaime McVey and those involved with our wellness programs and employee benefits committee. Together, they make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of our college and community.”

Jaime McVey, GCCC’s Assistant Professor of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER), served as this year’s KAHPERD President. Through her leadership, McVey highlighted GCCC’s active role in promoting health and wellness across Kansas. She has also organized numerous fitness challenges, health awareness activities, and other wellness initiatives for GCCC employees over the past year.

The President’s Citation Award commends GCCC’s unwavering commitment to initiatives that extend beyond the classroom, fostering wellness and enhancing quality of life across the state. Through its leadership and focus on health education, GCCC is setting a standard of excellence and community service in Kansas.
