Shoot for Scholarships on Oct. 26, 2019

[Garden City, KS] Oct. 8, 2019 - Community members can help raise funds for Garden City Community College's annual "Shoot for Scholarships" without participating in the Oct. 26, 2019, competition event.

The GCCC Department of Public Safety (DPS) will be raffling off two firearms - an 9 mm SIG Sauer P226 full-sized, service-type pistol and a 9 mm SIG Sauer P365 compact pistol - as part of the 2019 annual event designed to raise funds for students. Tickets to win both guns are only $25 each, and can be purchased at the following locations: the DPS department inside the John Collins Vocational Building on campus; the GCCC Endowment Association inside the Student & Community Services Center on campus; or the AAA Pawn Shop, 132 W. Kansas Ave., in Garden City.

The value of guns together is around $1,300, and the raffle winner must be able to legally own a handgun and pass a background check to claim his or her prize, according to Brandy Unruh, GCCC DPS director. Only 150 tickets will be sold, and the winner will be drawn at the Oct. 26 event; however, he or she does not need to be present to win.

Funds raised from both the raffle and "Shoot for Scholarships" competition benefit DPS students enrolled in criminal justice, emergency medical technology, and fire science programs. Registrations are still available for the community-engaging pistol, rifle, and shotgun competition held at the Sand and Sage Gun Range in Garden City, and is made possible through the following partnerships: Garden City Endowment Association, Garden City Police Department, Sand & Sage Gun Club, Finney County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Garden City Trap & Skeet Club.

Participants will be placed into teams of three and will be joined by a DPS student. Registration is $30 per person or $50 per team, and participants will be places into teams of three and joined by a DPS student.
