On Sunday, March 12, the GCCC cheer squad took the floor at Johnson County Community College to compete for the Region 6 Cheer and Dance Championships. The team threw a strong routine and finished first place in the conference. This marks the third year in a row that the team has placed in the top of the division. In 2015, GCCC Cheer brought home the Region VI Championship; in 2016 they were the conference runner up; and 2017 saw the team move back to the top spot. Under the tutelage of Head Cheer Coach, Brice Knapp, the team has had continued success, and for the second year in a row, will be heading to the National Cheer competition in Daytona Beach, Florida April 6-9.

According to GCCC Head Cheer Coach Brice Knapp, the road to the top of the conference was not an easy one. Said Knapp, “I am very proud of the work that the team put in leading up to the competition. These kids have faced adversity this past month. We actually had to change quite a bit of our routine the day before we left due to unforeseen absences. Cheer is not like basketball, it is hard to sub in a new player. When we lose someone, it changes the whole dynamic of the routine with formations, skills, and pyramids. I don't think there is another team in our conference that could have made the changes we made in a very short amount of time.” The focus will now be on preparing for the national competition. “We will be going up against the best of the best in Florida. I am hoping for a top 5 finish this year,” said Knapp.
