GCCCA Celebrates National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week 2024
[Garden City, KS] September 17, 2024 -- The Garden City Career Connection Academy (GCCCA), a division of Garden City Community College (GCCC), proudly celebrates National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week from September 16 to September 20, 2024. This national observance showcases the transformative power of adult education and honors the accomplishments of adult learners who are committed to furthering their education. It also raises public awareness of the vital role that adult education and family literacy play in strengthening communities.
In recognition of this important week, Mayor Manny Ortiz of Garden City, Kansas, proclaimed September 16–20, 2024, as Adult Education & Family Literacy Week, acknowledging the significant contributions adult education makes to the community.
"Adult education is essential for helping learners build new skills and unlock greater career opportunities," said Claudia Horney, Director of GCCCA. "Family literacy uplifts entire communities by breaking cycles of poverty, improving health outcomes, and fostering deeper community engagement."
During the 2024 academic year, GCCCA made a remarkable impact by serving 740 adult learners in GED (General Education Diploma), ELA (English Language Acquisition), and Citizenship classes. This reflects an impressive 20% increase from the 616 learners in 2023, continuing the upward trend from 486 in 2022 and 401 in 2021. The consistent growth highlights the rising demand for adult education and underscores GCCCA’s commitment to meeting this need.
As the new academic year kicks off, the academy is already experiencing unprecedented momentum, with 380 students enrolled—a record-setting number for this time of year. With typical enrollment reaching around 300 by the third session, the early surge points to continued success and an exciting future for the program.
