GCCC Meats Team Finishes 4th Overall at 2021 American Royal Competition

[Garden City, KS] October 19, 2021 -- The 2021 GCCC Meats Team competed at the 2021 American Royal, an intercollege meat judging contest, hosted by Nebraska Beef in Omaha on October 17th.  The team finished 4th overall while placing 2nd in Beef Grading, 2nd in Total Beef, 3rd in Beef Judging, 3rd in Lamb Judging, 4th in Questions, and 6th in Pork Judging and Placing Classes.

This is the first team in the history of GCCC Meat Judging that had never been in a beef packing plant until the competition. Most teams will have up to a year of experience before this point in their career (they had competed in 3 contests last spring without ever evaluating an in-person beef carcass for grading).  But due to the pandemic, beef plants are not available for practice.

Individually, Cora Welch (Lakin) was 11th overall placing 3rd in Total Beef and 5th in Beef Judging. Shantal Covarrubias (Garden City) was 13th overall placing 7th in Beef Judging and 8th in Placings. Brandon Jones (Ulysses) was 14th overall placing 7th in Total Beef and 8th in Beef Grading. Emy Martinez (Garden City) was 17th overall placing 5th in Beef Grading and 6th in Lamb Judging.

The team will compete in their final competition on Sunday, October 31st at Cargill in Friona, TX.
