GCCC Board of Trustees Meeting Recap June 17, 2025

[Garden City, KS] June 18, 2025 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in the Omar D. Angeles Endowment Room at GCCC.

The Board heard a five-year program review from the Counseling and Chemistry departments, covering a program overview, achievements over the past five years, and opportunities for future advancement.

The Board approved a temporary construction easement for the City of Garden City to support continued development of “the Pit,” an underutilized area on the northeast portion of GCCC’s East Campus. This space is being transformed into a community disc golf course through a partnership between GCCC, the City, and a group of local patrons. Improvements already made include mowing, tree removal, and initial course installation.

The temporary easement allows the City to build walking paths and sidewalks connecting the course to the existing Talley Trail and the citywide sidewalk system along Spruce Street. These new paths will run behind Tangeman Fields, improving pedestrian access to the area. There is no cost to GCCC for the easement or construction, as all expenses will be covered by the City.

The Board approved the 2025-26 property and casualty insurance renewal through the Kansas Insurance Cooperative for Schools (KICS) at a cost of $695,829.72. In addition, the Board approved an additional $15,370 to increase cyber liability coverage to a $5 million limit, ensuring greater protection in this critical area.

The Board approved the 2025-26 athletic insurance policy renewal with Zurich for an annual premium of $182,500. Additionally, the Board approved the renewal of the 2025-26 catastrophic athletic policy with Zurich at an annual premium of $18,985.

The next regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Omar D. Angeles Endowment Room of the Beth Tedrow Student Center on the GCCC campus.
