What is respiratory therapy?

Garden City Community College, in partnership with Seward County Community College, is now offering the Respiratory Therapy program to students within commuting distance of Garden City. Respiratory Therapy is a health care specialty that offers a set of unique challenges in the areas of prevention, treatment, management and rehabilitation, of people with cardiopulmonary problems. Respiratory Therapists work with very sophisticated medical equipment, such as mechanical ventilators, that require a great knowledge and passion for technology. Students learn how to apply these high tech devices to care for and treat patients.

Job Opportunities

Respiratory Therapists will be able to work in:

  • intensive care units
  • emergency rooms
  • newborn and pediatric units
  • operating rooms
  • sleep laboratories
  • asthma education programs
  • smoking cessation programs

How does the program work?

Respiratory Therapy classes are offered on the Garden City Community College campus via interactive television. Laboratory skills practice sessions are usually once a week through Seward County Community College in Liberal. Some travel will be required for the clinical. General education requirements can be taken through GCCC. After taking the required courses, students are eligible to take the Certified Respiratory Therapist Exam and Registered Respiratory Therapist Exam offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
