Migrant Family Literacy Program

The Migrant Family Literacy Program of Garden City Community College strives to offer the best resources possible to the Migrant Population of the Community. The Migrant Family Literacy Program works with Garden City Community College and the Garden City Unified School District 457. Through this partnership, we commit ourselves to making this community a better place for everyone to learn, work, and live.

The Migrant Family Literacy Program at Garden City Community College is funded by the Kansas State Department of Education, Migrant Family Literacy Continuing Grant. Within this grant there are Performance Indicators, objectives, State and Federal requirements that the program will continue to achieve and excel.

The purpose of the Garden City Community College Migrant Education Family Literacy program is threefold.

  • To help migrant parents become full partners in their children's education
  • To help migrant children reach their full potential as learners
  • To provide literacy training for migrant parents

There are four major goals for the Garden City Community College Migrant Education Family Literacy program.

  • To increase the functional literacy level of the adult migrant participants
  • To improve the communicative English and literacy skills of Limited English Proficient parent participants
  • To enhance the process of children reaching their full potential
  • To increase parent's awareness of their child's development and educational needs.
