AEC is a traveling team that competes with other community colleges and
universities across the state in academic contests, similar to high school Quiz
Bowl. The team attends state and national competitions during both the fall and
spring semesters. All intellects, scientists, mathematicians, literature,
history and general knowledge students are welcome.

PTK is the international honor society for two year college students,
offering leadership development, fellowship, service and scholarship
opportunities.
Today PTK is the largest honor society in American higher education with over
1.5 million members and 1,200 chapters located in the 50 states, U.S.
territories, Canada and Germany.
Membership is by invitation and requires student to complete a minimum of 12
hours of associate degree course work and earn grade point averages of 3.5 or
higher. Students must maintain high academic standing throughout their
enrollment. Part-time and full-time students are eligible and pay a one-time
membership fee of $65, including international, regional and chapter dues.

This group is open to anyone currently enrolled in an art class, including
all studio areas and encompassing two and three dimensional visual arts. This
club works to promote and fund art-related activities, conduction various
activities throughout the year.

This is the official organization for students in the nursing program and
pre-nursing courses. The association acts as an information group, stimulates
interest in the profession and promotes participation in campus and community
projects. ANS is also active in sponsoring an annual pinning ceremony in
conjunction with GCCC graduation.

GCCC sponsors intercollegiate participation in football, men’s and women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s cross country,
men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s and women’s
rodeo, cheer/yell leading, and dance. The Broncbuster athletic teams belong to
the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference as well as the National Junior
College Athletic Association.
Athletic programs are designed to provide competition for any student who can
qualify for the teams and meet college, conference and national association
requirements. Physical conditioning, teamwork and cooperation, competitiveness,
mental discipline and spectator enjoyment are among the objectives of the
athletic programs at Garden City Community College.

The Student Athletic Training Club promotes the educational advancement and
hands on experience for students interested in the field of Athletic Training.
SAT club is open to individuals enrolled in or pursuing degrees in athletic
training, physical therapy, sports medicine, or other related medical fields.

Membership in the band is open to all students for one hour of credit per
semester. Previous band experience, desire to contribute to campus life,
enthusiasm and pride are requirements for members. The Broncbusters Pep Band
plays for all home football and basketball games. There are also Concert Band
and select GCCC Jazz Ensemble opportunities. The band, with other college
musical organizations, makes an annual tour of Southwest Kansas high schools in
the spring.

The GCCC Block and Bridle Club is recognized by the National Block & Bridle
Club. The club’s focus is to promote animal agriculture. They offer a chance for
individuals to learn about everyday aspects of agriculture and animal husbandry.
They research industry trends associated with the industry. Some of the
activities of the club include attending National Convention each year, working
the Endowment Phone-a-thon and occasionally serving dinner at the GCCC Endowment
Auction. The team supports some of the competition aspects of the meats judging
team as well as has different fund-raising events throughout the year.
Objectives of the club include promoting a higher scholastic standard and
complete understanding of animal sciences, development of critical career
activities, and building closer relationships among all students pursuing any
phase of agriculture or animal science. All students are welcome to become
members of this organization.

The Concert Choir has built a long, proud tradition of excellence in the
performance of a great variety of choral works. The Concert Choir, consisting of
many of the finest vocalists at GCCC, in recent years has performed major works
with instrumental accompaniment including Pergolesi’s Magnificat, John
Rutter’s Requiem and Gloria, Vilvaldi’s Gloria,
Mozart’s Requiem and the Fauré Requiem.
No auditions are required for the Concert Choir. Auditions are conducted
annually to select the College Singers, whose members are drawn from the ranks
of the Concert Choir. The College Singers perform for school and community
functions each year, presenting a variety of music from the Renaissance to vocal
jazz literature.
J. Clayton Wright, B.M., M.M.E. Music Education, choral and vocal director, has
had many years of experience conducting school, church, and community choirs in
Kansas and in the Los Angeles area.

The College Players Club is available for all those interested in plays and musicals, acting and technical theatre.
Members help produce GCCC theatrical productions and promote theatre arts in Garden City. The College Players, in association with the Drama Department, produce three to four shows per year.

Members of the Criminal Justice Competition Team are selected on grades,
leadership abilities and involvement. Members must be a criminal justice major
and become a member of the American Criminal Justice Association/Lambda Alpha
Epsilon, which sponsors regional and national competitions. Kansas criminal
justice programs also sponsor additional in-state competitions during the year.
The team has been successful at state, regional and national levels in all of
the competition categories including written tests, crime scene investigation,
physical agility and firearms. GCCC's competition team has won numerous regional
awards and three national championships.

Delta Epsilon Chi (DEX) is an international organization for college students
preparing for a variety of career areas. Activities promoted by DEX integrate
with and enhance the student’s curriculum. In addition, the organizations’ close
ties with the business community provide both opportunities for members and an
appreciation of the free enterprise system.
DEX membership is an essential resource for future professions that will benefit
from marketing, management and entrepreneurial skills and knowledge.

GC3 Student Media is media by the students for the students.
Reporters, designers, and producers from media production staffs
converge to create news, information, entertainment and
advertising. Members from the “Breakaway” magazine and
“Silhouette” newspaper work collaboratively on assignments for
mass media distribution. The GC3 Student Media staff meets
weekly in addition to each staff’s regularly scheduled course
times. These meetings promote teamwork and foster the
development of each member’s media technology skills. GC3
Student Media staff is open to students in all majors and
disciplines. Qualifying staff members travel to state and
national media conventions each semester, including the Spring
College Media Advisers Convention in New York City.
Breakaway Magazine
A tradition on campus is the Breakaway magazine, which is created during the
academic year, and distributed campus and community wide. Students combine their
writing, editing, design and photography skills to produce a four-color
publication that has earned numerous state awards. Staff members earn one-credit
hour per semester and qualifying students earn tuition and book scholarships.
Staff members come from diverse majors including biology, digital arts, English,
history, and psychology.

Silhouette Newspaper
The Silhouette, the official student newspaper of Garden City Community
College, is published on a bi-weekly basis and distributed on Thursdays. Staff
members earn one-credit hour per semester and qualifying students earn tuition
and book scholarships. Staff members come from diverse majors including biology,
digital arts, English, history, and psychology. By working with other students
to produce news for print and the web, students have an opportunity to develop
skills that will make them more marketable in the workplace—whether it is in
journalism or any other career field.

The Hispanic American Leadership Organization’s goal is to nurture and
encourage leadership skills of young Hispanic men and women. HALO offers the

The GCCC meat judging team dates back to 1988 on this campus. Overall, meat
judging was started in 1927 as a way for students to utilize industry concepts
and equations to compete with other colleges and universities with an animal
science curriculum. The students gain exposure to industry experts and leaders.
The team competes at six national contests each year: National Western in
Greeley, CO., the Southwestern in Fort Worth, TX., the Houston Livestock Show &
Rodeo Contest in Houston, TX., the Beef Empire Days Contest in Garden City, the
American Royal Contest in Omaha, NE., and the High Plains National Championship
in Plainview, TX.
The meat judging team has had 8 All-Americans since the award was created in
2002. The team has won the Beef Empire Days Contest (’89, ’90, ’98, ’99, ’01),
the Southwestern Contest (’01, ’09), the National Western Contest (’06, ’09) and
the High Plains Contest (’03). The team boasts Reserve National Championships in
2001, 2003 and 2005. Being located in the heart of beef processing, the team has
an advantage in judging beef but has been very successful in pork and lamb
judging as well. Team members are awarded books and tuition scholarships for two
years. Many industry leaders look for the career traits that meat judging team
members have, including decision-making, note-taking, communication and time
management skills.

The Catholic college student organization’s primary purpose is to help develop
the religious and intellectual life of the college student. The club is open to
all interested students and provides not only theological and religious
sessions, but also social activities. The organization also has several service
projects throughout the year and interested members attend the KCCSC (Kansas
Catholic College Student Convention).

Throughout theyear there are informative sessions about nursing, community service projects,

SAC provides fun events to encourage students to socialize, enjoy themselves
and relax. Scholarships are offered with books and tuition payment for those
students willing to work an average of twelve hours a week at the Student Center
and assist in the advertising and overseeing of student activities. All students
are encouraged to apply but only those who are able to maintain a 2.0 GPA and
are enrolled full time are eligible.

SIFE has grown into one of the largest collegiate organizations in the world.
Working together as a team, SIFE students apply classroom experiences to develop
and implement educational outreach programs that teach the principles of free
enterprise, including market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial
success and business ethics. The SIFE experience enables college students to
reach their full potential by helping others reach theirs. Students acquire
teamwork, leadership, communication and project management skills not typically
gained through other programs. This organization is open to any students who
wish to better themselves, their communities and countries.

TEL is a campus organization for criminal justice and other public safety
majors including fire science and paramedic/EMST majors. Members are eligible to
apply for membership to the American Criminal Justice Association/Lambda Alpha
Epsilon. Members have the opportunity to participate in various activities and
community service projects, such as serving as mentors with the Finney County
Big Brothers-Big Sisters organization. Other service projects include various
Garden City/Finney County social events like the Tumbleweed Festival, Balloon
Festival, 3-I show, Ride for the Future and many others.
GCCC public safety department "adopted” Garfield Elementary School in the 1990’s
and continues to work with projects around their ‘sister’ school. There are also
ample opportunities for in-service specialized seminars and involvement with
area and Kansas public safety professionals.
