Rodeos on the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association(NIRA) circuit include Friday and Saturday night performances, each called a “long go,” followed by a championship round Sunday, called the “short go,” for top contenders from the two preliminary rounds.
Men’s events include tie down roping, formerly known as calf roping; steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. Women's events include barrel racing, goat tying and breakaway roping. Team roping takes place as a coed event.
The balance of the spring segment includes the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Rodeo, Weatherford, April 10-12; Fort Hays State University Rodeo, April 18-20; and Panhandle State University Rodeo, Guymon, Okla., April 24-26.
Top teams and riders who qualify will meet June 15-21 at the 2014 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., which draws competitors from all 11 regions of the NIRA. GCCC has had contenders at nationals the past five summers, including the entire women’s team in 2011.
