High school seniors can explore the possibilities for a career in the arts at the third annual Fine Arts Day set for Thursday, March 6 at Garden City Community College from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registration is available at the college website, www.gcccks.edu/events/fineartsday14 or by contacting Joyce Bernbeck in the college fine arts building at 620-276-9540.
Students who attend will discover the opportunities for scholarships in Vocal Music, Piano, Instrumental Music, Drama, Media, Creative Writing, and Art and Design. They will be able to apply for tuition and book scholarships for the 2014 fall semester, as well as grants in aid. The day will also include scholarship performance auditions and interviews.
The GCCC Fine Arts and Humanities Division hosts the day which allows southwest Kansas high school seniors to tour the outstanding facilities for arts and media programs in the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building and John Collins Technical Building, watch a student showcase program and sit in on actual college classes. College-bound students will also have the opportunity meet students, faculty and staff.
The day’s itinerary includes check-in at 9 a.m. in the Fine Arts lobby, an opening session at 9:30 a.m. in the Fine Arts auditorium and the student showcase presentation at 10 a.m. featuring performances by the GCCC choir, band, jazz ensemble, and theater department, followed by lunch at 11:30 a.m. in the college cafeteria. The afternoon schedule includes breakout sessions at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The sessions will offer hands-on, guided activities to explore. In session one, students can sing with the GCCC College Singers, take a tour of the music and theatre facilities, peer into studio practices and test drive multimedia options in mass communication. Session two allows students to enjoy music ensembles in action, view art student demonstrations and explore the field of digital photography.
