The Garden City Community College Mercer Gallery has planned a new show featuring art inspired by music. The show opens Sunday, April 13, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. and runs through Friday, May 2.
The live musical performances will take place during the reception in the auditorium at the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building and will feature local singer/songwriter and GCCC student, Esteban Gonzalez as well as other local and regional bands.
The Cadenza exhibit celebrates two mediums of artistic expression uniting to link color and form with music. Local artists, instructors and students have been asked to respond to musicians with a work of art. The artists and musicians span diverse genres with the only connection being that most are regional.
“Some of the artists are working with musicians they have loved and been inspired by for years,” said Brian McCallum, Gallery director and GCCC art instructor. “Most of the artists, however, are working far from their comfort zone in genres of music that they are not entirely familiar with and with music they have only known for a short time.”
The balance of the exhibit will be on display, accompanied by recorded music, in the Mercer Gallery located in the west wing of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building. Regular viewing hours are noon to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
