BUSTERS ADD FIRST OKLAHOMA NATIVE!

Garden City, KS. June 10, 2008

Add another first to the men’s soccer program. Ulises Caba- a two time Oklahoma All State performer-becomes the latest Buster signee and first player to ever play for either Buster soccer program from the near by state of Oklahoma.

The Buster men’s soccer team has already received a commitment from one of the best players in the state of Kansas in DJ Zuniga, as they can now proclaim the same thing for the state of Oklahoma. Caba-who also was a place kicker on the Guymon High School football team in his junior and senior years- was an Oklahoma Class 4A   All State performer both his junior and senior years.  He guided his Tiger soccer team to a final class 4A state ranking of #6 and a District Championship his senior year.   Ulises scored over 20 goals in 2008 and will add that much more fire power to-what will sure to be-the most offensively productive team the Busters have ever put on the field. Head Men’s Coach Steve Gorton stated:   “Ulises is a great player and is a great character as well. He is a tough competitor that loves to play the game.”   Caba-along with the rest of the Buster squad- will start pre season training on Sunday, August 3, 2008.

TWO BUSTERS COMMIT TO MESA STATE

May 5, 2008

Garden City, KS.

It seems to be only fitting that two players who committed late to begin their two year careers would commit late to begin their four year careers as well.

Tyler Michnik and Jeremy Mallak- two former Buster Soccer players who are still attending GCCC and were part of the 2005 and 2006 Buster soccer squads- have decided to finish their college soccer careers at NCAA Division 2 Mesa State in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Tyler Michnik came to Garden City with current head men’s soccer coach Steve Gorton when Coach Gorton was hired as an assistant in August 2005. Originally from Vicksburg, Michigan-Michnik spent the 05’-06’ seasons as a starting outside back for the Busters.  Michnik was an All State performer in the state of Michigan out of high school and played his club soccer for TKO, which is based out of Kalamazoo, Michigan.  In the summer of 2006, Michnik played for the PDL’s Thunder Bay Chill. With this experience in hand, Michnik put together a sophomore campaign that saw him be named an All Region and All Conference performer for the Busters in 06’. Coach Gorton stated: “Tyler is a very skilled defender, with the technical ability to play out of the back.”

Albuquerque, New Mexico native Jeremy Mallak was also a member of the Buster squads in 2005 and 2006.  Jeremy opened up his freshman campaign with a 6 goal, 12 assist season- as Mallak currently holds the school record for most career assists with 15. Mallak was part of the 2005 squad that saw four players from the Nike Rush compete for the Busters- a Nike Rush squad that finished third in the West Regionals in the summer of 2005.

Head Men’s Soccer Coach Steve Gorton stated: “Jeremy is a player who can get down the line, and put in nice service. I am very happy with these two deciding to go to Mesa. I feel that Mesa State is an up and coming national power in NCAA Division 2 soccer.  Their facilities are gorgeous, as the program is heading in the right direction.”

GORTON ANNOUNCES FALL 2008 SCHEDULE

Garden City, KS.

The Soccer office at Garden City Community College has announced their fall 2008 men’s soccer schedule that will see the Busters play 10 home games at Memorial Stadium and 8 away matches. The Busters open up their season on the road at the Barton County Tournament, where the Busters will have their first game of the season against a team that finished #4 in the country in 2007 in national power San Jacinto- South. The Busters finish up competition at the tournament the following day with a game against Western Nebraska- a team the Busters have beat the last two seasons.

The Busters will then get a break before they play rival Dodge City Community College in a game that will be considered a non conference match. The Busters open up their home campaign as they host the first annual SMC Invitational-a tournament that will benefit the Fight Against Breast Cancer.  The Busters will play the first game of the tournament against Blue River Community College (MO.) and will follow that up by playing September 7th against Lincoln College (IL.) These games will be the first time ever that a GCCC soccer program have faced teams out of Missouri and Illinois, respectively. Those games will be followed with a home match against NEO A&M- a first year program in 2008. The next evening the Busters will board a bus and head into Kansas City for the first conference game of the 2008 season against KCK. The Busters have won the last two meetings against KCK.

The next 5 games will see the Busters involved in the toughest stretch of conference play, highlighted by an away doubleheader weekend that will see the Busters take on 2007 regional semi-finalists Allen County and 2006 Region VI Champions Coffeyville. The Busters will then head into Great Bend in a highly anticipated game that will see them square off against the 2007 Region 6 Champions in Barton County

The next five games will be home contests that will see the Busters take on the following opponents: 2005 Region 6 Champions Johnson County, 2006 National Tournament participant Northern Oklahoma, 2007 Region 6 Finalist Neosho County, Hesston, and Independence.  Garden City will then hit the road again to take on a team that has competed in the last five Region 6 Tournaments in Cloud County.

The Busters will wrap up their regular season schedule versus Dodge City Community College and Cowley Community College – a team that is the latest addition to soccer in the KJCCC with their 2008 season debut. The Busters will then get a 6 day lay off before-what they are hoping is- a home regional playoff game. “The schedule that has been put together will test the ability of each individual player and-at the same time-prepare the team as a whole for the post season region tournament,” Stated Head Men’s Coach- Stephen Gorton.

Busters Commit Loyacano from Miami!

The Buster Men’s Soccer team have added to their 2008 recruiting class by adding defender Adrian Loyacano.  Adrian- known as “LA ARDILLA”- is a 5’9; 150 lbs. native of Miami, Florida.  In Miami he was a member of the Coral Gables High School team who captured a District Championship in 2006. He also brings strong club experience to the table, as he was a member of the Miami Springs club team.  Not only will Adrian  bring additional help to the defensive side of the ball, but he will bring with him a strong academic background. While in high school he managed a 3.7 GPA.  “Adrian fits what our program is about: he is a good player but equally a good student and person,” Stated Head Men’s Coach Stephen Gorton.

Garden City, KS.

It’s been a long journey for number #13 sophomore defender Zach Bowling-a journey he could not even have figured would have ended this way just one season ago…

Bowling- a native of Winfield, KS- will finish up his collegiate playing career at NCAA Division 1 University of Central Arkansas----joining former Buster teammate Derik Schmille and current teammate Ivan Zarate for the fall 2008 season.

Bowling came to Garden City from the small town of Winfield---as Bowling had no lengthy club soccer experience to speak of. In addition, Bowling was sparsely used as a back line player in his freshman season. However, Bowling worked his way into a starting back line role as a sophomore, garnering All Conference and All Region VI honors.

“Zach is an extraordinary kid. I have had the privilege of coaching him for two years here and couldn’t be more proud of him.  He has a lot of strong personal characteristics coaches look for: strong leadership, solid work ethic, bright, morally correct, and an unbelievable athlete that has a bright future in this game,” stated Head Men’s Coach Stephen Gorton.

Gorton went on to say:  “Zach and his family have been a blessing to our program in a lot of ways, as they continue to be huge supporters of our program and what we do here.  I’m so happy for Zach and the Bowling family, as I feel Zach has made the right choice in where to finish up his collegiate career. I am 100% certain he will make the right choices-both on and off the field- in his future at UCA.”  Bowling joins a list of six Busters from the 2007 squad that are moving on to the Division 1 level.

The Buster Soccer office has released an announcement that will be adding a transfer goalkeeper to the squad for the fall 2008 season.  6’4” transfer goal keeper Chris Raines (Aurora, CO.)  will be looked upon to compete for the starting goalkeeper spot for the fall season. Chris- who was a captain of his high school team in Aurora- was also named All Conference his junior and senior seasons.  He was a league player of the month several times through out his high school career, while posting .95 goals against average for his entire high school career.  Chris played his freshmen year of college ball at Colorado Mountain College and decided to transfer to Garden City.  While at Colorado Mt. College- he was named team captain, set the record for saves in a season and was selected for the Region XVIII First Team.  Head Men’s Coach Steve Gorton stated: “I am very pleased with Chris’s decision to come to Garden City. He has proven himself as a good college goal keeper and will be a huge addition to our program in 2008.”

BUSTERS SOCCER 2008 COMMITMENTS

FEBRUARY 27, 2008

GARDEN CITY:

Broncbuster men’s soccer head coach Stephen Gorton announces an incredible 17 member recruiting class for the upcoming season.  The class is highlighted by eight players out of Miami, Florida- one of whom played for the 2006 Illinois Skyhawk Collegiate Conference Champions McHenry County College. The list also includes the 2007 WAC High School Player of the Year and the leading goalscorer for the Busters in 2005.

“We are very excited about this incoming class,” Stated Gorton. “We are currently still recruiting five to six more players for the fall from all over the country. “This class will bring a championship mentality to the Buster program as well as the characteristics we are looking for in our program. With the losses in personnel from the 2007 season, these players have the ability to step in and fill the holes we needed for us to find success for the fall.”

Topping the list of newcomers is forward Federico Agreda,  Liberal’s own DJ Zuniga (midfielder) and goalkeeper Cesar Aguilar.  Federico’s list of accomplishments include: captain at South Ridge High School, Florida ODP participant, and a member of the Kendall Coalition who won the 2007 U19 Florida State Cup- finishing second in the Southern Region.

Aguilar is regarded an athletic goalkeeper who does what it takes to keep the ball out of the back of the net. He will be looking to fill the gap in between the pipes of departed Ivan Zarate, as Ivan will be playing in the fall of 2008 at NCAA Division 1 University of Central Arkansas.

DJ Zuniga makes the short trip north to start his collegiate career. Zuniga was the 2007 WAC Player of the Year  and was a two time Class 5A All State player.

Eight newcomers are already enrolled at GCCC and are training with the team in the spring.  Jose Cardenas, Alexis Dominguez, Jose Hernandez, Mariano Leo, Mario Ojeda, and Steve Shaw.

Samuel Andrade- a Brazilian defender out of the American School of Belo Horizonte- was redshirted in the fall and will look to compete for time in the back line in the fall.

Five other high school players will join the Busters in the fall including Jerson Carrasco, Zach Cull, Cody McClary, Juan Ortiz, and Jamie Rodriguez.

In it’s short three year history, the Buster soccer program has a list of team and individual accomplishments associated with a team of strong tradition. For the 2007 season alone, the Busters: finished the 2007 season in the Region VI Final Four for the second consecutive year, had six players named to the KJCCC All Conference list, had the KJCCC Freshmen of the Year, three All Region VI players, and one NSCAA/ Adidas All South player.  The program is also happy to announce that 9 players will see their collegiate soccer careers extended in the fall 2008. Six players have committed to NCAA Division 1 schools, two to NAIA institutions, and one player has turned pro and is currently playing in Sweden.
