When he looked for an outline of how he wanted to go about recuiting for the 2009 fall season, Garden City Community College men's soccer coach Stephen Gorton approached it in two thoughts of mind: Would it be best to field a recuiting class of all freshmen and see how they blend into the college game? Or would it be better to add a few transfers into the mix and see if that could propel the Broncbusters into a second straight NJCAA national tournament?..more...

Busters lose 5-4 in third place game
The freshman group from Florida tried its best to give the Garden City Community College men's soccer team at least a third-place finish at the NJCAA Division I National Championship on Sunday in Phoenix Arizona.
Unfortunately, the Broncbusters came up short to Mercer (N.J.) 5-4. The Busters fell behind early as Mercer scored the first two goals of the game in the 20th and 29th minute. Ulises Caba, a freshman from Guymon, Okla, put GCCC on the board at the 45-minute mark on a pass from Florida freshman Fedarico Argreda. more...

PHOENIX -- As the final whistle blew, the proverbial clock struck midnight for the Garden City Community College men's soccer Cinderella story. The Broncbusters' players fell scattered across the field in defeat, tears streaming down their faces, after a 4-1 loss to top-ranked Yavapai (AZ) College in the NJCAA National semifinals Friday at Rose Mofford Sports Complex.

PHOENIX -- Garden City Community College goalkeeper Chris Raines stood alone in the goal as the final shoot-out whistle blew, knowing that one more miraculous save would propel the Broncbusters to the NJCAA National semifinals for the first time in the program's four-year history. Raines stepped forward, lunged to his right, and blocked Mike Mecerod's kick aside as Raines' teammates stormed the field as GCCC beat fifth-seeded Georgia Perimeter College in dramatic fashion, 0-0, (2-1 Penalty kicks) in a shootout on Thursday at Rose Mofford Sports Complex..more...
History makers: Broncbusters soccer opens play in first national tourney
When he thinks back to the last week Garden City Community College men’s soccer coach Stephen Gorton uses one word.
“Crazy,” he said.
It would seem almost appropriate for this time of year when the Broncbusters have been preparing for their first appearance in the NJCAA national championship that starts Thursday at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix.
“It feels like you’re shaking everybody’s hand,” Gorton said. “Taking so many compliments that you just don’t know how to deal with it sometimes. I couldn’t be more happy — for myself, it’s OK, because I don’t want to be the big focus ever. I just kind of like to do my job and win, and have the kids feel like they’re important.”
In a season the Broncbusters made history by being the first men’s soccer program in school history to qualify for the national tournament, all of the focus will be on the players when play starts..more...

Despite record, Busters are underdogs
It's not so much a nervous feeling anymore for Garden City Community College men's soccer coach Stephen Gorton. It's more an anxiousness for his team to take the field tonight for one final home game this season.
Of course, if Gorton was a little nervous no one could blame him. This game has quite a lot more at stake than a regular season game. In fact, when the Broncbusters take on Jefferson (Mo.) College at 7 p.m., Garden City will be playing in its biggest game of the program's four-year existence. Win tonight and the Broncbusters head for Chandler, Ariz. to the national championships Nov. 19-23..more...
Friends form soccer dream team at GCCC
It was almost dusk Thursday and the 11 members of the Garden City Community College men's soccer team from Miami stood out front of the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex wearing their jerseys.
As Telegram staff photographer Laurie Sisk gave instructions to what she was looking for in a picture, several of them stood with their arms crossed, shivering while trying to stay somewhat warm as the cooler weather moved in. Not one of them seemed to mind as they listened to what Sisk set them up...more...

As it goes, keep pressing and the dam will eventually break.
All season the Garden City Community College men's soccer team has been able to find the routine fairly common -- score that first goal, and more will follow. Broncbusters hold off Panthers 1-0
There was not much of a silver lining Garden City Community College men's soccer coach Steve Gorton could put on his teams performance Saturday at Memorial Stadium. "I guess that's all that matters," Gorton said of the Broncbusters 1-0 win against Neosho County. "I guess I thought it was a pretty boring game altogether. We didn't show very much intensity, excitement or anything like that. I'm a bit disappointed in the way they came out to play."
Garden City, ranked No. 14 and coming off a seven-day stretch in which the Busters played two ranked teams and another sitting high in the Region VI standings, never got much going against Neosho. Even with the return of forward Fedarico Argreda and centerback Mariano Leo from their two-game suspensions for receiving a red card
GCCC Soccer moves along
It was Sept. 9, and the Garden City Community College men's soccer team was in new territory. For the first time in the program's four-year existence, the Broncbusters were ranked. No. 8 GCCC ends with tie at Barton
The Garden City Community College men's soccer squad was becoming accustomed to seeing nothing but wins added to its record. That is, until the No. 8 ranked Broncbusters traveled to Great Bend to face Barton County.
Their winning streak was stopped at seven on Wednesday. Fortunately for the Busters it wasn't the beginning of a losing streak as the two squads finished in a 1-1 draw after an extra 20 minutes of overtime. The two teams held each other in check for the first 45 minutes of action, but NCAA Division II Midwestern State University recruit, Steve Shaw, opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season at the 61:09 mark. The Cougars caught up with a free kick at the 72:56 mark to send it into overtime. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Raines was credited with nine saves in the game. There was plenty of scoring in the GCCC women's game with Barton County. Unfortunately, none of the scoring was done by the Lady Busters as they fell 9-0, in their worst loss since 2006. The Cougars outshot Garden City 37-5 for the game. "It is just one of those games you wish never happened and have to put out of your mind as quickly as possible," women's coach
Jeff Huffman said.
Barton County maintained its unblemished home record against Garden City with the Busters' teams unable to pick up a win. Next action for the Busters teams will be Saturday when they entertain Johnson County. The women's game starts at 2 p.m. with the men to follow at four o'clock. Both games are at Memorial Stadium.

The Lady Busters earned a split in their two weekend outings, falling 1-0 on an overtime penalty kick to Allen County on Saturday. However, they came back on Sunday to earn a 1-0 victory over the host Lady Red Ravens.....more...
