What
is Athletic Training?
Athletic
Training is a health field built on a variety of facets. Some that
are involved in the field are caring for immediate treatment, injury
prevention, physical conditioning, rehabilitation, nutritional advice
and equipment fitting/selection.
People
who want to become athletic trainers or practice some other aspect
of sports medicine aren't the only ones who can benefit from athletic
training at GCCC. The program is also valuable for individuals who
want to work in physical therapy, medicine, corporate or institutional
fitness or the paramedic field.
What
GCCC Athletic Training has to offer you
The field of Athletic Training is growing dramatically
in importance, and you can have the opportunity to start learning
at GCCC. Giving you an effective education is our highest priority,
but we also have a great tradition of nationally-ranked athletics.
The opportunity to work with our teams and travel to all areas of
the country will be a possibility right from the start. We have
gone from Utah to Florida and Illinois to Texas, including a football
bowl game for the past seven out of eight years. We also go to the
District V Training Convention.
In
addition to great facilities, we can offer many things that other
programs cannot, such as a direct connection with Garden City-based
Sandhill Orthopaedic and Sportsmedicine. As a student you receive
the opportunity to observe surgeries performed by our team doctor.
Twice a week the team doctor visits the training room to assess
the athletes, giving students a great opportunity to watch and ask
questions. GCCC has a cadaver lab on campus, which is another excellent
teaching tool.
Another
major advantage is our state and national recognition. You can also
create a valuable list of references. These references will be very
valuable when you're looking for a job, transferring to another
college, or maybe even getting an apartment.
With
the variety of personality types and top-ranked athletes that come
through GCCC, the ability to work with people is experience in itself.
You will be able to use this experience for years to come.
Athletic
Training Room
GCCC boasts a 1,600 square-foot training room located
in the northeast part of the GCCC Athletic Building, adjacent to
the baseball field. The facility houses two whirlpools, five treatment
tables, five taping tables, office, rehabilitation room, television,
Orthotron, state-of-the-art muscle stimulation/ultrasound unit,

Student
Athletic Training Camp
Every August, in conjunction with Sandhill Orthopaedic
and Sportsmedicine, Garden City Community College hosts a Student
Athletic Training Camp for anyone, high school to adult, interested
in the field of athletic training. The camp incorporates several
aspects of athletic training, taping and wrapping labs, and lecture.
A cadaver dissection is also included. Your cost covers room, food,
and a free T-shirt.
Scholarship
Opportunities
GCCC is looking to recruit dedicated and responsible
students to become student athletic trainers. Tuition and book scholarships
are available for in-state students who are accepted into the program.
As an out-of-state student, the athletic training department is
unable to offer a scholarship until you have attended school and/or
lived in Kansas for six months. There are several scholarships available
through financial aid for students who qualify.
