Mercer Gallery is a simple, quiet place that showcases the spirit of creativity. Operated by Garden City Community College and managed by David Kinder of the college art faculty, the gallery opened to the public in September, 1989.

The gallery is a reality because of generous support and contributions from Maxine Mercer Porter. Mrs. Porter provided the endowment in order to honor the memory of her late first husband, Clyde Mercer.

Mr. Mercer, who died in 1976, was a prominent Southwest Kansas farmer, teacher, pilot, welder and musician who took up art late in his life, and loved to create unique metal sculpture.

Mercer Gallery’s carved oak doors open up to welcome art-lovers and first-time visitors alike. The hushed atmosphere is a result of fabric-covered display areas and a patterned hardwood floor, all illuminated by carefully-controlled track lighting.

The two display rooms are used to highlight hanging and free-standing creations, providing the people of Southwest Kansas with a special opportunity to view high-quality art on a regular basis.

The facility, with regular hours and exhibitions throughout the academic year, does not charge for admission.

People with questions about Mercer Gallery are invited to visit with the director, or contact Garden City Community College.
