Student Support Services Unit Plan for the 2004-2005 academic year

 

Learner Success

á      Selected and provided academic, personal, and career counseling daily to the 200 participants in the SSS program. 68% of our 200 participants were low income and first generation or students with a disability. 69% of the students with a disability were also low income.

á      72% of the SSS non-graduating, non-transferring students were retained and are continuing to persist toward completion of their academic programs. 64 program participants graduated and or transferred at the end of the academic year and 98 students continued at GCCC to pursue their degree or certificate plans.

á      87% (174 participants) in SSS graduated, transferred, or continued at the college in good academic standing signified by a quality grade point average of a 2.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.

á      32 participants in SSS graduated and transferred to a 4-year institution. 17 participants transferred from our college to a 4- year institution. 4 participants graduated with an associate degree and then went into the workforce.

á      SSS took students to 5 different campuses throughout the state of Kansas. 9 students went to the University of Kansas, 2 students to Kansas State University, 6 to Washburn University, 5 to Wichita State University, and 1 to Fort Hays State University

á      Student Support Services Project met 100% of the administrative requirements for record keeping, reporting, and financial accountability as required by the grant.

á      SSS continued to work on establishing a more positive institutional climate for the program and GCCC as measured by a Likert scale instrument.

á      2 out of the 5 outstanding students honored at graduation were SSS participants.

á      70 SSS supplemental grants were given to participants at $470 and higher.

á      SSS continued to have a waiting list of students who wanted in the SSS program.

á      All 200 participants in SSS received Personal, Career, Academic, Transfer and Financial Aid Counseling. Personal Counseling contact hours (352:01), Career Counseling hours (178:57), Academic Advising hours (1213:38), Transfer Counseling (344:49), Financial Aid Counseling hours (163:39).

á      SSS provided tutoring for participants at 452:27 contact hours.

á      SSS hosted and at times collaborated with Counseling/Advising and SGA on different programs, workshops and events throughout the school year.

á      SSS took participants to a leadership conference in Fontana, Wisconsin.

* SSS staff taught College Skills Development classes.

 

 

 

 

Strengthening College Processes

á      Continue to utilize faculty division meetings to highlight the SSS program and request assistance for identifying potential SSS participants.

á      Assisted with Exploration Days.

á      Student Services Division Meetings.

á      Served on various committees throughout the college campus

á      Assisted admissions and counseling departments with early enrollment days on campus and at the high school.

á      Continued to work on integrating functions of SSS/Counseling.

á      Assisted with college recruitment activities.

á      Assist Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search Programs.

 

 

 

 

Service to the Community and Students

á      Served on 5 State Multicultural Conference Committee.

á      Assisted other programs on the Martin Luther King Celebration

á      Provided cultural, mentoring, and student/staff events to promote SSS participant involvement.

á      SSS created a Likert scale instrument to measure current institutional climate.

á      Hosted Success 4 Students Workshops to better Focus, Plan, Learn, and Succeed in college.

á      Hosted Cultural events on the college campus.

á      SSS Success Closet of educational tools to help students be successful in the classroom.

á      SSS checks out textbooks and other academic resources to participants on a first come first serve basis

á      Facilitate SSS student involvement in campus/community activities and events

á      Assisted Financial Aid Department with College Goal Sunday

á      SSS helped the Hispanic Community receive the honor of naming a soccer field after ÒMartin EsquivelÓ

Goals for 2004-2005

 

Helping Students Learn

 

á      Identify and select 200 participants annually. At least 67%will be LI and FG or SWD and 33% will be either LI, FG or SWD. Additionally, at least 33% of the SWD will also be LI.

 

á      At least 70% of SSS non-graduating, non-transferring will be retained and persist toward completion of their academic programs.

 

á      At least 80% of participants will meet or exceed GCCCÕs 2.0 academic performance level required to stay in good academic standing.

 

á      At least 80% of those expected to graduate will either graduate and transfer or transfer to a 4-year college.

 

á      Project will meet 100% of the administrative requirements for record keeping, reporting, and financial accountability.

 

á      Provide SSS students with opportunities to visit 4-year universities/colleges in Kansas

 

á      Work with financial aid staff to assist SSS students in acquiring financial aid to meet 100% of their needs.

 

á      Identify and assess students needs while completing Personal Success Plans with SSS student

 

á      SSS will continue to work on creating a more positive institutional climate as measured by a Likert scale instrument.

 

á      SSS and Counseling/Advising collaborate on career guidance and personal success speakers, programs, workshops, and events

 

á      SSS Counseling /Advising collaborate on providing individual and group personal counseling

 

á      Have a list of our 200 SSS participant passwords for access to their records on School Maestro

 

 

 

Leading and Communicating

 

á      Utilize faculty division meetings to highlight SSS programming and request assistance identifying potential SSS participants.

 

á      Move Martha LiskÕs office to room D119 to get her closer to the SSS/Counseling offices so that our department offices are all together

 

á      Through the collaborative effort of several departments provide college employees with information to increase awareness of low income, first generation, ESL and disability issues of students

 

 

á      SSS staff will attend grant writing workshops

 

á      Meet with other experienced grant writers on the GCCC campus for support on writing the grant for the upcoming SSS grant competition in the fall of 2004

 

á      Rewrite the SSS grant in hopes of getting funded again by the Department of Education for another 4 years.
