The volleyball program at Garden City Community College has competed at a high level in the Jayhawk West and Region VI. This report in part will be asking for assistance in attaining the wants and needs of the Broncbuster volleyball program. This report will include accomplishments, goals, projections, personal requests, equipment request, and additional project requests. The goal is to improve and move up in the national polls and compete at the NJCAA National
Tournament.
Broncbuster volleyball finished the season with a 34-15 record, with 15 of the 16 losses against nationally ranked opponents. The Busters had four All Region performers, four All Conference performers and were Academic All American as a team.
The Broncbuster volleyball team participated in ÒReading is FundamentalÓ week with USD 457 by reading books to Kindergarten and First Grades throughout the district. They also performed demonstrations and skill instruction sessions at the grade schools. Currently, the Buster volleyball program is hosting a Developmental League for boys and girls grades 1st through 6th. The Developmental League has increased to 137 participants this season.
Broncbuster head coach, Jeff Sanders, has attended and helped with numerous camps, clinics, and tryouts. The camps have ranged from southwest Kansas to south Texas. The coaching clinics attended have been with Toshi Yoshida, the USA WomenÕs National Team coach. The tryouts are for the USA Junior National, Youth National and High Performance teams.
Consistency is the key with the Broncbuster volleyball program and with six freshman on the roster, five started and one was a red-shirt. The future is bright for next year. The following is a list of goals, objectives and activities for next school year.
The Broncbuster volleyball team is the only athletic program at the college without a full-time assistant coach. An assistant coach is needed to further development of the volleyball program.
There is a need for space here in the athletic complex at GCCC. The weight room is not adequate for the teams that are currently here. We need a second weight room.
The gym space is also a concern. Student athletes come to a community college for the education and for the training in their specific sport. It is hard to give a student the training they need when you cannot get adequate gym time.
The bleachers in the back gym are disgraceful for a college of this stature. They are old and beat up. We do host events that take place in the back gym so the bleachers should be better. If we had chair-back seating on the south side of the front gym, we could take the current bleachers and move them to the back.
The bleachers in the front gym on the north side need fixed so that area can be utilized. There are many options and opportunities for that space. A roll down divider would help in the sectioning off of the two levels would create another practice or stretching area.
The Broncbuster volleyball team will continue to take part in the community though the school district and other special events. The community has supported our program and we are grateful for that. The members of the volleyball team really enjoy it also.
The assistant coaching position would be similar to the assistant baseball, basketball, football, and track duties. The budget for this position would be around $22,500.
Coach Sanders and the Broncbuster volleyball program are making plans and preparing to build further on the foundation that has been set. Forty win seasons are a benchmark in volleyball that was rarely attained at GCCC. More importantly, the 40-win point has not been consistently attained. In past years, teams would play between 55 and 60 matches per season, but changes in scheduling will make it much more difficult to attain the 40 win mark. The Busters plan to play a maximum of 35-40 matches next season, which includes post-season play. A single digit loss is the new goal that the Busters will set.
Broncbuster volleyball has battled and fought in the past three years to get to the place it is now. In the 2004-05 season, the Busters have a good foundation set to continue their winning ways and achieve the goals they have set. The Busters will definitely continue to battle with the other teams in the Kansas Jayhawk West upper echelon.
The following are some projections and goals for the 2005-06 season and beyond.
