GCCC BASEBALL

2003

Accomplishments

Learner success

The 2003 season put Garden City baseball back on the map. After a slow start the team rebounded by winning 16 of their last 20 and captured the sub-regional championship. The 2003 Broncbusters played in the Region VI finals at Seward County Community College with Cowley County, Neosho County, and Seward County. Lance Schartz and Dana Tosoni were named all conference with Schartz also being named All Region VI and Region VI defensive player of the year. The teamÕs final record was 30-28.

Broncbuster baseball is one area steeped in tradition. Garden City baseball has won 5 Jayhawk conference championships, 9 Sub-regional championships, 4 Region VI championships, and one Juco World Series appearance. The program has had 35 players drafted including 3 in the 2003 draft. Furthermore, the program has sent numerous players to division 1 including 9 in 2003. It is our goal to build on these traditions and expand them.

Responsive to community and Students

The goal of the Garden City baseball program is to be positive role models that our student Š athletes can trust. The program will strive to be a positive influence in community events and be involved as much as possible. In the fall of 2003 the program was heavily involved with the Lee Richardson Zoo and itÕs Boo at the Zoo Halloween celebration. The event hosted over 4,000 people and the team passed out candy and helped set up and take down all decorations.

Faculty and Staff Development

Broncbuster baseball coach Rick Sabath believes that proper communication between faculty and staff is essential for a properly run organization. The baseball team developed a study hall program involving student learning services, tutors, athletes, and coaches that enabled the baseball team to achieve the 3rd best team GPA in baseball for all of the Jayhawk conference. Moreover, the team had 5 academic all Americans for the 2003-2004 season where in there had only been 7 in the entire history of the program. Also, the program believes that it is essential to let each college entity run itÕs organization to ensure trust and loyalty.

Strengthening College Process

  1. We need to address the weight room issue. Too many teams and not enough space.
  2. Work study availability to compete with others in the conference
  3. transferability of classes- too many times IÕve had recruits tell me that advisors on campus visits told them certain classes wonÕt transfer

Service to the community

The baseball program is looking at several ways to make an impact in Garden City. The first one is to get involved in the Adopt-A-Highway program with specific reference to the first mile into the town itself. Second, we want to have a great involvement with the kids of Garden City through camps, public speaking at schools, and by offering various give always at games. Finally, we will look at working at a soup kitchen or shelter to serve dinners during the holidays for those in need.
