Accomplishments for 2003-04

 

Learner Success

-       Added Elementary Spanish I and II to the night class curriculum

-       Continued designing, developing, and teaching Spanish materials for the workplace

-       Distributed foreign language listening tapes for student use

-       Evaluated and modified speech ballots for faculty assessment of student success

-       Evaluated and modified speech syllabus, task weights for speech assignments, and speech assessment outcomes

-       Set up library authoring station in library for use in speech presentations

-       Coached students for local, state, national, and organizational office seeking speaking competition

-       Judged and coached Voice of Democracy speaking competition

-       Judged Garden City High School debate competition

-       Utilized local citizens for speech instruction in specialized fields

-       Developed an ESL tutoring program

-       Purchased and installed new Focus on Grammar software in ESL computer lab

-       Oriented students to CLC services and use of word processing software

-       Planned and implemented a new Level 7 writing course

-       Developed exit criteria for Speaking/Listening and Writing/Reading courses

-       Increased student appreciation for history through emphasis on historic context and relevance of current world events

-       Organized history study sessions to increase student participation and success

-       Evaluated and modified exit essay guidelines for faculty assessment of student success in English 101 and Basic English classes

-       Sent humanities, science, and social science instructors to Janet Allen workshop

-       Received $740 through GCCC Endowment Association to purchase 20 dictionaries and a white board for the reading classroom

 

Strengthening College Processes

-       Expanded the variety of class meeting times f

-       Visited various work sites to clarify employer/employee language needs

-       Contacted various employers to inform them about programs offered

-       Clarified Command Spanish concepts to instructor from Nebraska Western Community College

-       Increased communication among Title III, ESL, and English personnel

-       Provided information to adjunct and outreach speech instructors

-       Developed an Oral Communication Assessment tool that satisfies requirements for various speech institutions and colleges

-       Presented speeches for Finney County public gatherings

-       Raised money at GCCC Endowment Phonathon

-       Collected data on the needs of the ESL students, faculty, and community

-       Increased communication with area historical organizations

-       Provided in-services to faculty on journaling and writing across the curriculum

Service to the Community

-       Used tape duplicator extensively for foreign language courses

-       Presented Command Spanish classes to area USD, bank, and feed yard personnel

-       Taught feed yard materials to non-English speakers at the Brookover North and South locations

-       Provided volunteer services to local, civic, and professional individuals in preparation for public speaking events

-       Incorporated public speaking project for core competency evaluation

-       Revised focus of current ESL offerings

-       Planning to ease transition from FCCLC to campus by providing more Level 4 sections

-       Investigating admissions policies and tuition rates for ESL students

-       Developed a collection of videos, DVDÕs and print resources for classroom use

-       Varied reading class schedules to include 12 and 14 week sessions and night sessions

 

 

 

 

Goals for 2004-2005

 

 

Helping Students Learn

 

-       Hire supplemental instructors in the areas of reading, math, and English

-       Hire a work study student to monitor the Hope Study Skills Center to better monitor the lab and help students

-       Obtain ESL Reading software for use in D110 lab

-       Secure additional vehicles to meet increasing demand for transporting students to college functions

-       Expand our foreign language department by hiring a French/German instructor.

 

 

 

Leading and Communicating

 

-       Hire a full-time gen ed grant writer Ð salary is contingent upon success

 

 

Planning Continuous Improvement

 

-       Provide a permanent computer station with projector and internet connection for each classroom

-       Install cable and internet in all classrooms

 

 

 

 

 

 


Projections: 2006+

 

 

-       Create a writing/speech computer lab

-       Increase travel budgets for professional development

-       Develop courses for interpreters and translators

-       Secure a location to house a humanities video, DVD, audio, and written materials library

-       Identify high school students at Garden City, Holcomb, and Scott City that need developmental reading classes to improve their ACT scores
