Information on the many topics included within the general subjects of health and nursing may be found in books, magazine or journal articles, and in computer networked resources such as our CD network or the World Wide Web. Many of the indexes useful in finding information on these topics are not specialized for health and nursing.

Indexes to Nursing, Medical and Health Articles

ProQuest Nursing Journals Online at GCCC or with Kansas Library Card

Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL).

Available at GCCC, shelved on the index tables in the middle of the reading room. It is the print format index most specifically directed toward nursing -- it will help you find articles in nursing journals (and books, pamphlets and dissertations as well). You can see that this index is a publication which is sold to libraries of all sizes all over the country -- our library will have only a small proportion of the total number of articles cited, but many of them will be available on ProQuest Nursing Journals online..

The CINAHL index for past years is made up of two parts -- the white pages which list articles, books, etc. under subject headings and the yellow pages which are a master list of subject headings. The yellow pages are in one volume and the white pages in two more volumes. At the beginning of each volume are several pages of explanations to help you use CINAHL. In addition to explanations, the white pages include a list of all journals covered in the index. New references are published in paperback booklets (covering one or two months each) which update the index until they are replaced in one or two years by large bound volumes which cover one whole year.
