Library Rules and Information

Library Services Location

The Thomas F. Saffell Library of Garden City Community College is located in the Thomas F. Saffell Library Building. Many other college offices are also located in the "library" building. For the purposes of library users, "library," refers only to the parts of the main library room used for library purposes, and the library office and periodical room off that room. The "library" staff, are the library director and the three regular library staff members. The library staff is assisted by work-study student workers.

Other Services in the Building

The Comprehensive Learning Center (CLC) is located in the same large room as the library. The CLC computer lab provides application programs for word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, etc. -- the library does not provide these services. The lobby in the front of the library building is, of course, subject to all Garden City Community College rules, but is not "inside" the library -- for example, "in-library use only" items may not be taken through the security gates out to the lobby. Student Support and Counselors' offices are in the lobby area.

Who May Use the Library

Students and Faculty of Garden City Community College have priority in the use of library materials and library equipment designated for public use. They and adults in the community may register for library privileges. After registering, a user may checkout circulating items (student and faculty users may also use items on reserve). Access to the library area may be barred to persons violating library and college rules relating to disturbing or threatening other persons or rules relating to use of college computer equipment or networks. Access to borrowing privileges may be barred to persons with unresolved obligations to return or pay for long overdue items. Students and faculty doing GCCC related research will be given priority if there is not sufficient staff or equipment time available to serve all library users on demand. Anyone is welcome to come into the library and to use, in the library, library materials and library equipment designated for public use.

Use of Library Collections

To borrow materials, library users must have a valid borrower's account with the GCCC library and show a current GCCC photo ID or (for community users) a GCCC library barcode card. If a library user has a valid borrower's account and can be properly identified by other means such as a driver's license, the library may, but is not obligated to, check items out to the user. Books from the Circulating Collection and sound recordings are due 21 days after checkout. Videos are due 3 days after checkout. If renewal is requested before an item is due, the item may be renewed for one additional period. Items which remain overdue 21 days or more are considered long overdue and patrons to whom such long overdue items have been lent are subject to suspension of their library borrowing privileges until all their long overdue items have been returned or the replacement value as determined by the library has been paid. The replacement cost of long overdue items will be billed to the borrower. If bills for such long overdue items have not been paid or the item returned by the last day of the Fall or Spring semester that first occurs after the item became long overdue and if the borrower was enrolled in a GCCC class when the item was borrowed, the overdue bill(s) will be transmitted to the GCCC Business office for collection. Items held in the Reserve Collection, may only be used in the library (or on such other restricted terms for use as may be marked on the item or stated at checkout). A library user must have a valid library account to use Reserve items. Items in the Reference Collection may only be used in the library, but are on open shelves where they may be used without a library account. Library users without an account may also use, only in the library, books from the Circulating Collection. These are on open shelves.

Magazines, newspapers and journals in print format may only be used in the library.  The library subscribes to several services which provide indexing and access to the full text of many magazines, newspapers, and journals from computer terminals in the library. Many of these online services provide options to email articles.

Other Library Services and Facilities

A self service, coin and dollar bill operated, photocopier is located in the library to make copies at 10 cents per page. Staff will make copies of library microfilm at 10 cents per page. The library does not currently charge for printout from library reference computers. No "application" programs such as word processors are provided, and printing of material other than research results is not supported by the library. Faculty and students referred to the library by faculty for assignments may inquire about image scanning.

The library provides reference services for all library users. Interlibrary Loan services are available only to library users registered with user accounts. Community users should consider their local public libraries to be their primary Interlibrary Loan service providers. However, if a Community User needs Interlibrary Loan services which are difficult to obtain from the local public library, this library will provide limited interlibrary loan service. Users should remember that all libraries are limited in the number of recent magazine articles they may borrow.

Conduct in the Library

Certain areas within the library may be designated as quiet areas. In those areas conversation and other noise is not permitted. Library users may converse quietly in other areas of the library. Extended conversations and noisy activities should be taken elsewhere. The library building lobby is available for social conversation and loud study groups. Beverages, hard candies, cough drops and the like are permitted in the library. Library users may not bring into the secured area of the library full meals or snacks that may leave greasy spots or crumbs (for example -- frozen dinners, hamburgers, fries, burritos). Beverages may not be used or set down close to computer terminals or other equipment.

Laws, ordinances, general GCCC policies, and specific library area rules apply to all behavior in the library. Persons using GCCC computer networks (that is anyone using a GCCC computer or network, either on campus or via any off campus access) must comply with GCCC rules for computer and network use and with all applicable laws. See Computer Rules.
