LADY BUSTERS GET 2ND COMMITMENT FROM SAN ANGELO
In December of 2007, Head Women’s Soccer Coach Jeff Huffman made his way down to the Dallas area for a third straight weekend in a row to see the college showcase known as the Arlington Showcase. While at the tournament, Coach Huffman saw the club team San Angelo United in competition and saw two players to his liking. With San Angelo being almost nine hours from Garden City, Coach Huffman did not know if he would even be able to get these two players to come for a campus visit. Little did he know that he would eventually-not only get them to come for a campus visit-but would eventually sign both of them to national letters of intent.
Christina Carrillo- an outside back/midfielder-becomes the second player off of the San Angelo United club team to commit to becoming a Lady Buster for the fall of 2008-joing club teammate Marissa Castillo. She also becomes the sixth commitment over all in the 2008 recruiting class. Carrillo has been a committed member to San Angelo United for four years, where her club side competed in both the Arlington Premier Classic League and the West Texas Premier League. Her team finished in 2nd place in the classic flight of the 2007 Austin Labor Day Cup. She also comes to the Lady Busters with one year of varsity high school experience with Central High School, located in San Angelo. Central High School has a student body population of 2,200 students, serving the 10th-12th grade.
“Christina has been a pleasure to work with through out the recruiting process,” Head Women’s Soccer Coach Jeff Huffman stated. “Christina first got in contact with me when I was in the New York Capital District of Albany, NY. I definitely feel that Christina can bring capital gains to the program, whether it be as an outside midfielder or providing depth in our outside back roles. One way or another, our program improves with her signing---as that is what one expects as this program continues to mature from its infancy.”
LADY BUSTERS GET PIVOTAL AUSTIN COMMITMENT
Taylor Eason- a back line player from Austin, TX- becomes the fifth commitment for the Lady Busters 2008 recruiting list. Coach Huffman had the opportunity to see Eason play in the Spring of 2007 and again at the Texas Cup in November 2007. Eason came for a visit in January of 2008 and verbally committed to the program within the week of her campus visit.
Eason-who will look to major in something agricultural related at GCCC-will be counted on to bring a solid presence in the middle of the back line after the departures of sophomore center backs Aggie Kozak and Amalee Dykes, respectively. She played for three seasons with the Lone Star Soccer Club and their 90’white team. Her fourth season saw her compete for the Lone Star Soccer Clubs 90’ red squad. While with the white squad, she was coached by Hue Menzies-former assistant coach at NCAA Division 1 power University of Texas and a former staff instructor for both the North and South Texas ODP staffs, respectively.
Eason is a two year varsity player at McNeil High School, a school that serves 2,700 students between the 9th-12th grades and is located in a suburban area between Round Rock and Austin, Texas. As a junior at McNeil, her high school team made it to the District 25 Class 5A tournament. Her senior season sees her high school squad in first place in the district through the first of March.
“Without question, someone who can play for the Lone Star Soccer Club has the ability to step in and compete right away in the Jayhawk Conference.” stated Head Women’s Soccer Coach Jeff Huffman. “We had a need to fill a void in the center back role, as I honestly feel Taylor can be that player for two years. With Taylor’s desire to play collegiate soccer and the fact she wanted to major in something ag related in college, it just made sense she started her collegiate career as a Lady Buster."
LADY BUSTERS GET THIRD TEXAN
The flood gates have opened. Sarah Velasquez- a midfielder for Caprock High School in Amarillo, Texas-becomes the third Texan to commit to the Busters in a five day time span.
Velasquez has been a four year varsity starter at Caprock, helping her high school team to a 2nd place district finish during her junior season. She also added five goals during her junior campaign. During her four year varsity career, Velasquez has seen time in the outside midfield role, holding midfield and outside back positions. Coach Huffman had a chance to see Velasquez in competition in the 2007 edition of the Tulsa Showcase. Velasquez played her U-18 season of club for the Amarillo ShockerZ club team. To boot, Coach Huffman brings in a student athlete with a strong 3.75 cumulative GPA. Coach Huffman’s teams have had a strong showing academically over the course of three seasons, with four people involved with Lady Buster Soccer named to the All Jayhawk Academic Team during the Fall 2007 semester.
Head Women’s Soccer Coach Jeff Huffman stated, “Sarah has the ability to play either a holding midfield or outside midfield role. Her most comfortable position is that holding midfield role, as she will be given every opportunity to prove herself in that role as part of our program.”
BUSTER PROGRAM GETS FIRST EVER TEXAS COMMITMENT
They have come from as close as Garden City and from as far away as Brazil. Some of the states include New Mexico, Michigan and Louisiana. Which ever way you want to slice it, players from all over have descended into the Buster Soccer programs over the course of the first three years of their existence. However, a recruit has never popped up from the state that is only 1 hour and 45 minutes from Garden City-----until now.
Marissa Castillo-an attacking center midfielder from San Angelo, Texas- becomes the first ever soccer commitment from the great state of Texas for the entire Buster Soccer program. Castillo has played the last six years for the club team-San Angelo United. Her sophomore and junior years, the team competed in the Highland Girls Classic League and followed that up by playing in the West Texas Soccer League in her senior year.
Castillo has competed since her freshman season for Lake View High School, a team that competes in District 4A. Castillo has garnered some solid honors throughout her high school career. In her freshman season, she was named District 4A Newcomer of the Year, while being named to the Marble Falls All Tournament Team. Her sophomore season saw her be named First Team All District (6 teams in district) and achieved Marble Falls All Tournament Team honors for a second straight season. Her junior season saw her named Second Team All District. So far in her senior season, she was named MVP of the Marble Falls Tournament (8 teams)….
Head Women’s Coach Jeff Huffman states, “I had the opportunity to see Marissa compete in the Arlington Showcase in December 2007. I was in definite need of an attacking midfielder for the fall 2008 season, as I felt it imperative for the team to get Irma Reyes-a Kansas 2007 Class 6A Second Team All State selection-back to her normal stopper position. I feel Marissa is exactly the caliber of attacking midfielder I needed to-not only score goals for us-but be the link to our forwards.
LADY BUSTERS GET FIRST 08’ COLORADO RECRUIT
Ashley Crowley, a two year varsity starter at Highland Ranch (Colorado) High School, becomes the second recruit of the Lady Buster Soccer 2008 recruiting class for Coach Huffman. Crowley played her club soccer from her freshman-junior seasons for the Colorado Elite Soccer Club. Her junior season she competed a year up and played as a U-17 in the Colorado State League at the U-18 age level in the Premier 1 classification---which is known as the second most competitive division in the state at the U-18 age level behind the Elite 1 classification. This team was full of mostly seniors, as Ashley then moved on to play for the very competitive Real Colorado Athletico squad in the fall of 2007, where that team also competed in the Premier 1 classification. In February of 2008, the organization of Real Colorado was named by Soccer America as the 10th best Girls soccer club in the entire country. Soccer America selects the top 25 clubs, based on success of their teams in national youth championships over the last three years and national recognition for players (including U.S. national youth team selections, NSCAA/Adidas Youth All-Americans and U.S. Youth Soccer ODP Interregional All-Stars) from these clubs in 2007.
“I saw Ashley play for the Colorado Elite back in May 2006 at the Colorado Showcase held at Dicks Sporting Goods Park, as I had kept tabs on her since,” Head Women’s Soccer Coach Jeff Huffman stated. “Ashley has the ability to play either an outside midfield or a forward role for us. I fully expect Ashley to draw upon her vast club experience and bring to this program the ability to-not only score goals- but a winning mentality to the program thru her past club successes.”
STING SOCCER PLAYER BECOMES FIRST 2008 COMMITMENT
Goalkeeper Carrie Hart becomes the first commitment for the Lady Busters 2008 recruiting class. Hart is currently enrolled as a full time student in the Spring 2008 semester and is currently involved in off season work outs with the team. The path that Hart took to get to Garden City was definitely an interesting one. At the U-14 and U-15 age level Hart played goalkeeper for the popular Florida youth soccer club, the Blackwatch Soccer Club. Hart played for John Mendoza, who currently acts as team coordinator at NCAA Division 1 University of South Florida.
Hart then moved on to the Brandon Soccer Club as a U-16, yet played for their U-17 club team. Hart played one season of varsity soccer for Durant High School before graduating in May of 2007 at the age of 16. Durant High School is where current Detroit Tiger Ryan Raburn graduated. Hart’s family then moved to the Dallas area in the early summer of 2007. Hart came for a campus visit to the GCCC campus in the early summer of 2007, where it was agreed upon from all parties that she would attend Tarrant County Community College as a part time student in the fall of 2007. In the mean time, Hart tried out for the Sting Soccer Club, making the club and being put on their Sting Royal West 90’ squad. This team competed in the fall of 2007 in Division 2 of the Highlands Girls Classic League.
Head Women’s Soccer Coach Jeff Huffman states, “I am very happy that Carrie decided to start her collegiate career as a Lady Buster. She will bring a solid level of play to the position, as she has the ability to be one of the best goalkeepers in Region 6 before it is all said and done.”
COLORADO NATIVE TABBED AS ALL-REGION
Brooke Lindholm, a freshman back from Aurora, CO (suburb of Denver) was picked as a Second Team All-Region selection by the junior college coaches of Kansas. Lindholm becomes only the second player picked as an All-Region selection for the Lady Busters. She follows Jackie Cojon-who was also a second team All Region selection-during the Fall 2005 and 2006 seasons.
Lindholm attended Gateway High School and played her youth club soccer for the reputable Colorado Storm Soccer Club. Coach Huffman saw her compete during the Sport Source Showcase in Dallas in December of 2006. Lindholm also competes for the institutional debate team at GCCC, coached by Mark Jarmer.
“It is a real tribute for Brooke to be recognized by the coaches of Region 6,” states Head Women’s Soccer Coach Jeff Huffman. “Brooke was the only marking back that was named as either an All-Conference or All-Region selection. Her position as a marking back is one that does not stand out for other coaches to notice right away. It is obvious through her selection that she earned the respect of enough coaches that saw her play. These same coaches recognized her attributes in a position that gets so little recognition in the selection process.”
