The
fall 2007 season will see Coach Gorton enter into his third season
at Garden City Community College. Upon his hire in
August of 2005, Coach Gorton made an immediate impact with the men's
program, bringing with him two men's players that started every
game for the Busters during the Fall 2005 season-one of which was
selected Second Team All Region at the end of the Fall 2005 season.
Coach Gorton is responsible for identifying talented recruits and
setting up campus visits for men's prospectives. He also is responsible
for the training sessions of the men's team and is looked upon for
his tactical knowledge on game days.
As
a player, Coach Gorton was a two time all state player at Mattawan
High School in Mattawan, Michigan. He played varsity all four years.
After
high school, Coach Gorton attended Lincoln College . At Lincoln,
Coach Gorton was named to the All-Conference, All-Region, and NSCAA
All-North squads. He holds the school record for most career assists,
most assists in a single season, and is #7 on the all time scoring
list in the school's history. After Lincoln , Coach Gorton
accepted a soccer scholarship to Div.1 Western Illinois University
where he was an All Mid-Con defender and helped the Leathernecks
to there best season in many years. After Coach Gorton's senior
season with the Leathernecks he was invited to the MLS pro combine
in Florida.
Coach
Gorton's association with the Premier Development League is long
and impressive. During the summers of 2003 and 2004, Coach Gorton
played with the Thunder Bay Chill of the Premier Development League
of the USL, where he was named to the PDL team of the week on several
occasions and was named the Chill's Franchise Defender of the Year.
Coach Gorton also had stints with the West Michigan Edge and the
Springfield Storm of the PDL. He also was an assistant coach
for the Chill during the Summer of 2006. In the summer of 2007,
Coach Gorton is looking forward to helping out the Springfield Demise
of the PDL.
Before
coming to GCCC, he was an Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at NCAA Division
1 Western Illinois for the 2003-2004 soccer season. At Western
Illinois University , Coach Gorton coached four All Mid-Con Conference
players and one NSCAA All Mid West player. He helped guide the Leathernecks
to a Mid-Con Conference Championship and a Division 1 NCAA birth.
Coach Gorton has been Director of Camps in Thunder Bay , Ontario
for the Lake Head Express Soccer Club and the Thunder Bay Chill.
He has also worked with the North Western Ontario Regional Program
under the direction of Technical Director Davie Colistro.
Coach
Gorton worked as a personal assistant for the owner and head coach
of the PDL franchise team- the Thunder Bay Chill. During the
summer of 2005, Steve worked under the direction of the Director
of Coaching of the Metro Strikers- located in St. Louis, MO- while
working at Paul Zarky's "get High on Sports" soccer camp as well.
Coach Gorton has worked other University camps such as the University
of New Mexico Elite Camp , Western Illinois University Soccer Camp,
and Eastern Illinois University Soccer Camp. Coach Gorton
has also been involved with the Kansas ODP Boy's Program since his
arrival to Kansas.
Coach
Gorton holds a USSF License and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree
from Wetern Illinois University in Recreation Adminstration and
is currently working on his master's in the same field. |
