Home sweet
home for Lady Busters

jsprinkle@gctelegram.com If
the Garden City Lady Broncbusters can get their timing down, they
could be a team quickly on the rise.
Though
the GCCC women's soccer team was flagged numerous times for offsides
violations Friday, when they did hook up, they made Allen County
pay dearly.
Forward
Miriam Galvan scored two goals on breakaway passes from her midfielders,
and Garden City held on for a 2-1 triumph over the Lady Devils at
Memorial Stadium.
It
was the second win for the program, and the second victory in front
of the home crowd. The Busters improved to 2-4 in their inaugural
season.
"I
like playing in front of our fans better because it gives us energy,
encourages us and helps us out," said GCCC goalkeeper Britney Carter,
a Garden City High School alum who was on the first varsity team
to play a game - in any sport - on the synthetic turf at Memorial
Stadium. "We just had a lot of energy right away. We all just came
together as a team better today than usual, too."
Galvan,
who was the culprit on many of the offsides calls, stayed back just
long enough to take a cross-field pass from Yuliana Verela and boot
it home 21 minutes, 7 seconds into the game to put the Busters on
the scoreboard.
After
the Devils (2-8) tied it, Galvan took a pass from midfielder Ashley
Olson and put it into the back of the net with 20 minutes remaining
to give GCCC the lead for good.
"I
would get caught up in the game," Galvan said of the offsides calls.
"I don't know - it just came easy. I think I just caught the energy.
I had some midfielders that actually got me the ball up there, Ashley
and Jackie, who got me the ball. It was good to get breakaways."
Carter
lost her shutout bid 2:36 into the second half when Lori Coykendall
bounced in her own rebound after knocked the ball away. Carter finished
with 16 saves.
The
Busters have a showdown Wednesday at archrival Dodge City.
