Soccer Signs In-State GK
The
Garden City Community College Men's Soccer Team has taken a step
to improve the depth of their goalkeeping with the signing of 5
'10 Ivan Zarate of Maize, KS. Zarate, 17, was born in Mexico City
, Mexico and lived in Mexico until 2003. During his time in Mexico
, Zarate was part of the Pumas Youth Program for 4 years. In 2003,
Zarate and his family moved to Phoenix , Arizona as Zarate was tabbed
as the starting boys varsity goalkeeper at South Pointe High School
both his freshman and sophomore years. He played for the Galaxy
Soccer Club out of Arizona for one year and also was part of the
Arizona Olympic Development Program state pool at the U-16 age level.
His
family moved to Maize mid-way through the Fall of his Junior Year,
forcing Zarate to miss the fall soccer season. During his senior
season at Maize, Zarate split time with eventual First Team Class
6A All State goalkeeper Eric Krissek and helped guide Maize to a
third place finish in the Class 6A State Tournament.
“Ivan
brings a high level of athleticism to the goalkeeper position,”
Head Men's Soccer Coach Jeff Huffman states. Ivan has really wanted
to be a part of this program since our initial contact, as Coach
Gorton did an excellent job of selling the program to him. With
my knowledge of the goalkeeper craft, I am confident with Ivan's
work ethic that he will leave a much improved goalkeeper
in two years---and will have many four year college options to choose
from.”
