The
Garden City Community College Rodeo Team handled double duty when
they hosted the 39th Annual GCCC Intercollegiate Rodeo March 3-5,
but the extra challenge didn't prevent some top individual performances,
as well as a strong advancement in regional standings.
That
should help as the group mounts up again for another round of
arena action this weekend.
"Our men's team won third for the weekend, right behind Southwestern
Oklahoma State University and Panhandle State University ,"
Head Coach Jim Boy Hash said.
"We also moved ahead of Fort Scott Community College to take
over third place in the region," Hash said. "I
believe this is the first time ever for GCCC to be ahead of Fort
Scott in the men¹s team standings. We're now only a
short distance behind Panhandle State for second place in the
region."
The top two Central Plains Region teams will advance to the College
National Finals Rodeo, scheduled at Casper , Wyo. , in June.
In individual action at Garden City's lone local college rodeo
of the year, GCCC bareback rider Casey Colletti, Pueblo
, Colo. , took second in the long go and first in the
short go, earning second in the average.
Meanwhile, GCCC steer wrestler Cort Scheer, Elsmere, Neb.
, tied for first place in the long go for his event,
then went ahead to take first in both the short go and average.
Garden City's Jace Bolen, Sharon Springs , paired
up with Trell Etbauer from PSU to place 10th in the long go segment
of the team roping competition, then advanced to earn fifth in
both the short go and average.
In women's action, GCCC's Shannon Cowan, Hinton, Iowa
, placed eighth in the long go in barrel racing, but
hit a barrel in the short go to finish out of the average placing.
GCCC competes in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association,
and most Central Plains Region rodeos include two preliminary
rounds, each called a long go, followed by a final segment known
as the short go. That's also standard procedure for GCCC,
which conducted the home event indoors at the Horse Palace on
the Finney County Fairgrounds.
"I¹m sure the bucking horses will be better than what
we had to work with at the last two rodeos," an optimistic
Hash said about the Fort Scott contest March 10-12, "and
this should help us out."
"All we need to do is draw some good bucking horses, and
let my kids show their talent," he added. "The
same goes with the timed events."
In addition to this weekend's Fort Scott action, GCCC will compete
on the following schedule:
March 30- April 1, Panhandle State University, Goodwell, Okla.
April 6-8, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Weatherford,
Okla.
April 21-23, Fort Hays State University
April 27-29, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant, Okla.
The
region conducts three rodeos each year in the fall, then shuts
down over the winter term and resumes action in February. GCCC
and other teams got back in the saddle for spring at the 2006
Kansas State University Rodeo Feb. 24-26, with the Garden City
men's team taking second, as well as earning fourth place in regional
standings.
Rodeo
events for men include tie down roping, formerly known as calf
roping; steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding
and bull riding. Women's events include barrel racing, goat
tying and break-away roping. Team roping takes place as
a co-ed event.
