Manzano Named Honorable Mention All-American

Garden City, KS-Thomas Manzano of Garden City Community College has honored by being named as an National Junior College Athletics Association honorable mention All-American.  The 6’4” freshman guard from Brooklyn, NY led the Broncbusters to a Region VI championship for the first time since 1956 and a sixth place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.  This honor caps a brilliant one year career as Manzano has signed to play at the University of Wyoming next fall.

Manzano led Garden City in both scoring and rebounding on the year.  He averaged 16.2 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game.  In addition to these categories he was also 2nd on the team in steals and field goal percentage.  While Manzano had a very good regular season, he really shined in the post season.  Manzano was named Region VI Tournament Most Valuable Player and was also named to the all-tournament team at the NJCAA National Tournament.  During the Broncbusters’ run, Manzano shined the brightest.  In the Region VI Tournament Manzano averaged 18.5 points per game and during the NJCAA National Tournament Manzano averaged 26 points per game.  During the national tournament he broke a GCCC record that had stood since 1952.  His 38 points in the first round of the NJCAA Tournament was the most every scored in a game by a GCCC player.  That broke the previous record of Harold Patterson who scored 35 in 1952.

Manzano is the 11th NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball All-American at Garden City Community College.  The last NJCAA All-American for the Broncbusters was Julian Allen in 2007.  He was one of only three players from Region VI to garner All-American honors.

There's a story behind the game for Baumann

HUTCHINSON -- Today's game between Garden City Community College and Lamar (Colo.) for fifth place in the NJCAA National Tournament could easily have a couple of story lines to it.

It could be touted as the battle for supremacy of U.S. Highway 50 (the road that separates to the two colleges by a little more than 100 miles. It could be thought of as the game between the college that Alaura Sharp got her first head coaching job at (Lamar) as women's basketball coach against the school that just hired her away to start the 2009-10 season. And it also has the appeal of being the game, should Garden City win, that would break a school record for wins in a season with 26..
