Adam Morrison Doing Well at Florida Atlantic

Former Garden City Southpaw Throws Well Against North Carolina, Boston College

March 11, 2008

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA – Former Garden City pitcher Adam Morrison has made a smooth transition into the NCAA DI ranks at Florida Atlantic University.  Morrison appeared twice against the University of North Carolina, the back-to-back National Runners-up, and started against Boston College.

The left-handed pitcher from Englewood, CO, and Cherry Creek High School, continued the    success he had against junior college hitters when he faced the Tar Heels.  Morrison struck out five Chapel Hill opponents in 3.2 innings.  At this point, Adam has had two starts and three relief appearances.  FAU has won both games that Morrison has started against Boston College and Eastern Michigan.  The former Buster earned the win against EMU last week.

Playing for head coach Kevin Cooney, Morrison has posted 14 strikeouts in 12.2 innings and kept opposing hitters to a .178 batting average.  Morrison was scheduled to start the Owls Sun Belt Conference opener at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock but it was cancelled due to snow in Little Rock.

Morrison played for the Broncbusters during the 2006 & 2007 seasons.

Busters Sweep Four Games From Butler

Garden City Finishes First Conference Weekend 4-0

March 1, 2008

GARDEN CITY, KANSAS – After taking the first two games of the series on Friday the Busters repeated the feat and swept Saturday’s doubleheaders as well therefore completing the sweep against 16th ranked Butler CC.  Garden City (11-4, 4-0) held off Butler (4-8, 0-4) on a couple of rallies and won 7-4 in game one.  Game two saw the Buster offense take over finishing the game with a 10-run rule, 15-5 victory.

The Buster offense was led on the day by shortstop Cass Via (Fruita, CO) who went 6-for-7 with four runs batted in.  Along with Via in game one, Dan Oracion (Frisco, TX) and Marcus Palimenio (Omaha, NE) both had multiple hits off of the Grizzly pitching staff.  Also, Ben Wilson (Lawrence, KS) and Luke Fisher (Grand Junction, CO) blasted homeruns in the nightcap

In game two the Busters were led by Via’s four hits and three hit performances by Sloan Soulia (Peyton, CO) and Zac Barger (Fruita, CO).  Oracion had another multiple hit game, this time with two.

Hayden Daugherty (Elk City, OK) and Nate Van Bibber (Littleton, CO) both earned a win with making each of their records 2-1.  Daugherty was relieved in the 6th inning by Kyle Oestereicher (Arvada, CO) who wrapped up game one for the Busters.  Van Bibber earned his third complete game, in as many starts, after the Busters went up by 10 runs on Soulia’s 6th inning double that scored Barger.

The Busters are scheduled to play at Otero JC on Wednesday and will continue their KJCCC West schedule in Great Bend on Saturday and Sunday when they travel to play Barton County CC.  First pitch is slotted for 1 p.m. on both Barton County doubleheaders.

Two-way Star Erik Mattingly Signs with Busters

GARDEN CITY, KANSAS—Erik Mattingly, a senior at Bear Creek High School in Lakewood, Colorado, has signed his NJCAA National Letter of Intent to play for Garden City Community College next season, Head Coach Chris Finnegan has announced.

Mattingly, who also played with the elite Colorado Slammers this past fall, is expected to see playing time as a right-handed pitcher and as a left-handed hitter while in a Busters uniform.  Erik is a shortstop for Bear Creek Head Coach Brad Kidwell as well as a pitcher.

“We’re very excited to have Erik on our roster for next year.  He’s a hard-working guy who understands that success doesn’t come in pill form but rather through sweat and hard work,” said Recruiting Coordinator Ryan Sawyers.

Mattingly, the son of Greg and Linda Mattingly, will be one of the new freshman on what will be a sophomore dominated team next season.  “We only have a few small holes to fill, from a recruiting perspective,” said Sawyers.  “We feel that Erik is one of those players that has the potential to have an immediate impact on a program,” he continued, “And, as a competitive junior college, we must have impact freshmen to achieve our goals.”

Mattingly is the first signee for the 2009 season that the Busters have announced.  Garden City opens their 2008 campaign on February 8 at Northeast Texas Community College.  The Busters will open their home schedule on February 20 at Williams Stadium, the best on-campus, junior college facility in the country.
