Assistant
Coach Ryan Sawyers joined the Broncbuster coaching staff in November
2005. He came to Garden City after coaching for two seasons
at Allegany College of Maryland under the Junior College Hall of
Fame Coach Steve Bazarnic, who is the winningest active JUCO coach
in the country. Coach Sawyers' main responsibilities within
the Busters coaching staff will be to serve as the pitching coach
and recruiting coordinator.
In
2004 Coach Sawyers was the pitching coach for the Chillicothe (Ohio)
Paints Professional Baseball Club (Independent A). The Paints
led the Eastern Division of the Frontier League in ERA and had two
pitchers' contracts purchased by affiliated teams.
For
the 2 003-04 academic year Ryan was the volunteer assistant coach
at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. He worked primarily
with the pitching staff while he was a Boilermaker, assisting the
pitching coach with everyday duties. The Boilers finished
that season with a trip to the Big Ten Championship Tournament in
Minneapolis, Minn.
Sawyers
began his coaching career at Shepherd College (now University) in
Shepherdstow, W. Va. in the fall of 2000. After spending one
season as the volunteer assistant coach, Ryan was promoted to pitching
coach. During his first year as pitching coach the Rams finished
the season ranked 1 st in the West Virginia Conference in ERA and
29th in the country. The Rams accomplished the same conference
ranking in 2003 marking the first time in college history they had
led the league in ERA for back-to-back seasons. That summer
Coach Sawyers was the head coach of the Front Royal Cardinals in
the Valley Baseball League in Virginia.
Coach
Sawyers finished his collegiate playing career at West Virginia
Wesleyan College where he was named Conference Pitcher of the Year
in 1999 after leading the conference in strikeouts and ERA.
Sawyers also played two seasons at Allegany College of Maryland
where he was a member of the 1997 World Series team. During
his two years playing at Allegany the Trojans had an overall record
of 77-1 3.
Sawyers
also played for the Chillicothe Paints in 2 000 and as a rookie
posted a 4-2 record with one save.
Ryan
is married to the former Jaime Justice of Herndon, Va. They
reside in Garden City with their son Brady (2/1/05).
