GCCC
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME TO INDUCT SIX NEW MEMBERS
Six
coaches and athletes who made Broncbuster history between 1958 and
1992 will be honored Jan. 20 at the 2004 Garden City Community College
Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner.
The Hall of Fame, based at the GCCC Athletic Building,
was initiated in 1992 to preserve the tradition of GCCC athletics,
inspire future athletes and coaches, and educate fans and students
about the history of GCCC sports endeavors.
The dinner is set for 7 p.m. in the main
campus dining room, as part of a week-long series of celebration
events surrounding the opening of the new GCCC Student Center. It
will be preceded by an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hall of
Fame in the Athletic Building, and a 6:30 p.m. social on the portico
of the new Student Center.
Honorees include Finney County Sheriff
Kevin Bascue, a GCCC baseball player in 1981-82; and a father and
son duo of football players, Bill Bryan, Worthington, Minn., who
played in 1970, and Michael Bryan, Madison, Wis., who played in
1990.
Others are retired GCCC Men's Basketball Coach Jim
Carey, Garden City, who served from 1981 to 1992; Tony Pontillo,
Troumbull, Conn., a Broncbuster football player in 1958-59; and
GCCC Instructor Joe Slobko, who served as baseball coach from 1976
to 1997.
"These individuals have been outstanding representatives of
GCCC, and we're proud to have them as inductees for our GCCC Hall
of Fame," said Athletic Director Dennis Perryman.
The cost of the dinner is $25 per person,
and reservations will be available Jan. 7-18 by contacting Jennifer
Richman, 276-9606 at the GCCC athletic director's office. Seating
will be limited to 150, and those who attend will also get a chance
to see the new Student Center. All six honorees are planning to
be on hand.
Nomination and selection to the hall of
fame are open to outstanding former GCCC athletes from five or more
years in the past, or to past coaches and other athletic officials
who provided outstanding work for the Broncbusters more than five
years ago. People making significant contributions to the program
are eligible for honorary membership.
Selections are made by a six-person committee
made up of former athletes, representatives of the Broncbuster Athletic
Association and of the GCCC Athletic Department. |
