Tony Jewell
Honorary Member

Tony Jewell broadcast Garden City Community College athletics in five decades, from the 1940’s to the 1980’s. He covered GCCC All-American from Pat Patterson Clyde Russell. He began his career at KIUL in 1946 and became President and General Manager in 1968. Tony began his broadcasting career by recreating Major League Baseball games with information from United Press Copy. He received the Distinguished Service award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and was President of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. Born and raised in Finney County, Tony has been a positive addition to the community through educations from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College. Tony married his wife, Maxine, in 1942 and is the father of two daughters and one son.



Mike Friede
1976-1977

Mike Friede earned All-American honors as a Broncbuster by the JC Gridwire and National Junior College Athletic Association in 1976-77. He caught 17 touchdown passes in 1977 to lead the nation. After his career in Garden City, Mike played for Lee Corso at Indiana University with appearances in the Holiday Bowl and the East West Shrine Game. He was then selected as the 62nd player of the draft by the Detroit Lions in 1980 and traded to the New York Giants before the start of the season. Mike played two seasons for the Giants of the National Football League before moving on to the United States Football League (USFL). He played an additional four years for the New Jersey Generals.

Doyle McGraw
1963-1965

Doyle McGraw played defensive tackle for the Broncbuster football team and earned All-American honors. He also wrestled for the Busters. In his two years at Central State University in Oklahoma, Doyle earned All-Southwest Conference honors. In 1968, Doyle was drafted by the Washington Redskins, but decided to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian League. He then played for the Spokane Shockers of the Continental Football League where he was named Defensive Player-of-the-Year. In 1969, Doyle reported to the Oakland Raiders and played defensive tackle for Coach John Madden. In 1970, Doyle returned home to Garden City and his family to start his coaching career at Garden City Community College. He earned his Masters Degree at the U.S. Sports Academy in 1992.



Dale Meadors
1958-1994

The accomplishments that Dale Meadors has attained in his track and field coaching and administrative careers are unmatched. In the fall of 1958, Dale accepted a teaching and coaching position at Garden City Community College. He began his career at GCCC as an assistant football, basketball, and track coach. In 1960, Dale was named head track coach. He took over the head basketball coaching position in 1962. Dale served as the head track coach for 14 years in a 18 year span. He also coached golf for eight years at GCCC. Dale was the meet director and was instrumental in bringing the National Junior College Athletic Association National Track meet to Garden City for six years in the 1960’s. In 1989, he was elected to the NJCAA Track and Field Hall of Fame. Dale was known as Mr. Track and Field at the NJCAA level and was also the NJCAA Region VI Director for 18 years.
